Summer Jam: Thursday Standouts
PrepHoopsIllinois will be at the NY2LA Sports Summer Jam the remainder the second live period. Check out who were the standout performers on Thursday from Mequon, Wisconsin.
PG Ayo Dosunmu (Mac Irvin Fire 17U)
Dosunmu is the top 2018 in the state. He showed up a bit late to the first game, but as soon as he came in he made an immediate impact. Scored a quick six points. Throughout the day he got to the lane at will. He has some of the best handles in the country and that allows him to get to the rack with relative ease. Attacks downhill and is a naturally fantastic layup maker. That along with his speed might be the best assets in his game. Also passed it excellent! Possibly the best I have seen him with crisp dishes on the money time after time. High-major and clear #1 in Illinois.
SF Kahlil Whitney (Mac Irvin Fire 17U)
Have a day Mr. Whitney! The Roselle Catholic (NJ) 2019 small forward is a freak athlete! This has been known for a long time. He is explosive in the open floor and is starting to learn other ways to use it including getting on the glass. The surprise on Thursday was how well he shot the basketball from deep. Absolutely a spectacular performance from three. His jump shot is a big question mark in his game and he drilled three after three especially from the wings. The top 50 national prospect will see his stock rise even more if he continues to shoot this well.
SF Drew Peterson (Illinois Wolves 17U)
Peterson is a 6’7” small forward from Libertyville. Excellent size for position and length. He got the game winner in their first game of the event as Peterson got on the offensive glass for a put back at the buzzer. He is a good athlete that can get out in transition to score. Hit a couple threes. Good mechanics on his shot. Mid-major plus prospect.
SF Kyree Walker (Dream Vison 17U)
The Arizona State commit was just ok when we saw him about a month ago at Nike Elite 100 camp. For a top 5 prospect nationally in 2020 we were expecting a bit more. He has a physically mature body at 6’6”. Strong wing with broad shoulders. He was in attack mode Thursday afternoon in their matchup with the Mac Irvin Fire. Walker showed his athleticism in the open floor. Shot it better from three than we had seen in the past.
PF J’Raan Brooks (Dream Vision 17U)
Brooks is one of my favorite West Coast prospects! The 6’8” big man from San Diego is a big and powerful post that is a natural scorer on the low block. The USC commit is skilled with his back to the basket. Has a variety of moves that he can go to at any time. Going to be a great addition to the Trojans.
C Ryan Davis (Wisconsin Playground Warriors 17U)
Davis was struggling with a foot issue last night and this morning, but he fought through it in the afternoon game against an Australian team in a dominant performance by the Warriors. The Conant 6’9” center is a big bodied post that is a nice passer on the interior with good hands and footwork on the block. Had a couple excellent hook shots. The part that separates him is his ability to shoot it from three. Made multiple off the catch from triple. Area rebounder that plays physical on the glass. Mid-major prospect.
SG Cardell McGee (Wisconsin Playground Warriors 17U)
Good showing out of the Springfield Lanphier two guard. The 6’3” guard played both on and off the ball. Handles it well, but is best off the ball. I came away impressed with how aggressive he was. Very assertive scoring off the bounce and was slippery getting to the rim. Would like to see this consistent effort out of McGee on a game in and game out basis.
C David McCormick (Team Loaded 17U)
This 6’11” Oak Hill Academy product is HUGE! In my first time seeing him he is a mammoth young prospect on the interior. He plays extremely physical in the paint powering his way through his man like they aren’t even there. Once he gets his man deep in the post it is over! Display some skill too with a hook shot and a pair of mid-range jumpers. I can see why he is one of the more coveted posts in the country.
PG Treyvon Calvin (Illinois Stars 17U)
Calvin is a 6’0” 2019 point guard from St. Viator. He impressed playing up for the 17U team with his ability to push the tempo. Once the ball was in his hands he was off to the races the other way. Quick off the bounce and got in the lane throughout. Moves well off the ball at times and can hit a three. Active on ball defender.
PG Elliot Sieger (Illinois Wolves 16U)
Sieger was playing up on the 16U level. The DePaul Prep 2020 prospect had a couple early turnovers, but then settled in nicely. He has a funky release on his jumper, but they go in. He drilled them throughout their morning contest in a variety of ways off the catch, pulling up, and behind screens. The lead guard is scrappy and pushes it in the open floor. Scoring point guard is a D1 prospect. He had 18 points.
PG Markese Jacobs (Mac Irvin Fire 16U)
Jacobs is one of the top 2019 prospects that hails from the state of Illinois. The Kansas commit played in front of his lead recruiter in their afternoon game. He is an athletic and powerful point guard that plays with a lot of energy. He pushes the tempo and has the ability to get to the rack. Jacobs went for 18 points.
SG Teon Nesbitt (Chicago Demons 16U)
We caught the first half of this Butler Prep 2019 shooting guard’s game for the Chicago Demons. He is the younger brother of UMKC signee Marvin Nesbitt. The younger brother is a little shorter at 6’1”, but he has good strength in his arms with some projectability. Lit it up shooting it off the catch early in their contest. Clean release. Also mixed in a runner in the lane. This is a rising junior we will continue to track!
SF Will Wolfe (Illinois Wolves 15U)
Wolfe was a standout in their morning game. The 6’5” Aurora Christian wing is a crafty driver that had a few tough scores around the hoop. Solid ball handling wing that can shoot it off the catch. Moves well without the ball. Needs to improve on the defensive end, but Wolfe had an outstanding morning game putting himself on the radar of some colleges in 2020.
PG Donavan Newby (Illinois Wolves 15U)
Newby is the straw that stirs the drink for the Wolves 15U. This Bloom point guard runs the show. Good feel for the game and does a nice job of getting others involved. Confident leader on the floor. He really shot the ball well from the perimeter in the two games we evaluated. A bit of a set shot as it takes little to get it off, but he makes them at a solid clip. Newby is a D1 prospect.
