Recruiting Report: Wendell Matthews (2018)
Wendell Matthews seems to always find a way to be productive.
Matthews, a 6-foot-6 forward from Columbia Heights has played a big part in the success 43 Hoops has had this AAU season.
As a junior, Matthews averaged 16 points per game for the fourth-place Hylanders and he’s continued that strong play this summer as 43 Hoops has stacked up an impressive resume with wins over top local teams including D1 Minnesota, MN Eagles, Fury Wilde and WOTN.
“It’s been a good season,” Matthews said. “We’re winning a lot more than I thought we would. Making good runs in a lot of tournaments. It’s been a great experience.”
Matthews is a tough cover on the offensive end thanks to his aggressiveness, toughness, strong hands and soft touch. He runs the floor hard, posts hard and makes first contact frequently. He pursues the ball with a hot motor and solid footwork and athleticism allows him to create his own shot at a high level.
Matthews’ combination of skills and upside has him drawing a lot of college interest at the Division II level with schools ranging from Minnesota (Winona State) to New York.
Matthews said he’ll start setting up visits in the fall but with a few tournaments left in the AAU season, his goal for now is continuing to get better.
“I want to continue getting stronger,” Matthews said. “Improve my game even more for the next level so I can get more looks.”
