Recruiting Report: RJ McGee (2018)
Kenwood 2018 6’5” shooting guard RJ McGee showed flashes of his immense potential last season for his high school team. In a limited role he displayed big time athleticism, the ability to connect from deep, and upside as a wing defender. This year at Kenwood he will be looked at as one of the go to players. We caught up with McGee to chat about his spring, June, and recruiting.
McGee made the switch over the Playground Elite where he competed on the Nike EYBL circuit.
“My spring with Playground Elite went great. Playing in the EYBL was really fun. There was a lot of competition and I had to get adjusted to the level of play.”
He spoke about his play against the best competition in high school basketball.
“I think I played solid. My on ball defense and overall awareness on the court improved a lot playing against that level of competition.”
Then he got back together with his high school team in June.
“It didn’t go as well as I wanted. This year we have a lot of young guys who have little to no varsity experience. So Nas (Turner) and I, the only two seniors, had to help the young guys adjust to the level of competition.”
He talked with us about having to take on a much bigger role this upcoming season.
“This year I need to be a vocal leader on both ends of the court. Sort of a do it all type of player. Definitely need to increase my scoring output since we graduated our leading scorers from last year’s team.”
McGee updated where things stand with recruiting.
“North Dakota State, South Dakota, and Tulsa have been talking, but no offers yet. I’m hoping to change that in July.”
The one school he has visited to this point is South Dakota.
“The coaching staff is pretty cool. I met the head coach, Coach Smith on my visit. I loved the facilities. They have a new stadium and the weight room is a monster. I’m really big into weights so that was a plus for me. The campus is beautiful also.”
McGee is the #31 overall prospect in the 2018 class and #9 shooting guard.
