Recruiting Report: Michael Schaefer (2018)
At 21.3 points and 10.7 rebounds a game Michael Schaefer did something rare and that production helped St. Cloud Cathedral to state for the first time in 17 seasons.
After a double-double junior season the 6-foot-6 forward reflected on the memorable year.
“I definitely grew as a leader as a junior captain,” Michael told Prep Hoops. “I’ll never forget our section final game beating an undefeated Melrose as well as the entire state tournament experience!
“I loved playing at Williams Arena and the Target Center. I’ll also remember scoring my 1,000 point on a dunk at the target center.”
Michael is one of only a few that averaged a double-double in 2016-17 and he did it as an inside/outside threat. As good as Schaefer was last winter, he has specific plans on how he can be even better.
“I’m really working on my off hand and getting to the basket from the perimeter as well as rebounding outside of my area,” Michael told PHD.
Schaefer is a key piece to the Powerhouse Minnesota 17u team that recently won the Great Plains Alliance pushing their way into the third ranked spot in the state at that level.
“I love playing with highly skilled players who know how to pass,” Schaefer explained. “I’ve also learned that I can impact the game in other ways than scoring.”
Michael has scholarship offers from St. Cloud State, Southwest Minnesota State, and Minnesota State-Moorhead so far plus has some division one schools calling.
“I continue to hear from many schools in the NSIC,” Michael told NHR. “I’ve heard the most from West Point (Army), North Dakota State, Dartmouth, and Nebraska-Omaha. Looking forward to a busy July.”
And in July Michael has a goal of winning and/or playing well in the events his team is competing in.
“The goals are to advance far in the UAA Finals in Atlanta and Big Foot Classic in Vegas as well as win the D1 tournament in Minneapolis,” Schaefer said.
And for the high school year?
“For my senior season I’d like to see my team make a run and play for our first state title!”
