Recruiting Report: Markel Aune (2018)
Markel Aune‘s AAU season has been non-existent due to injury. The speedy and skilled point guard from Kennedy who scored 18.7 PPG as a junior has been unable to show much of his game.
“Everything was going okay until I broke my pinky in Session 2 of the UA circuit with Grassroots Sizzle in Indiana,” Aune said. “I’m happy and grateful to be a part of the team. I’m just going to get back in the gym… my finger was just cleared on July 3.”
The plan is for Aune to get back on the court this weekend in Atlanta. He’s been preparing for the last month or two, as his inactivity was bothering him; he absolutely loves to be on the court.
“I was still trying to lift weights and get cardio in so I could be in shape,” he said, “even though my doctor didn’t want me touching a ball or weights. But I did it, I couldn’t help it, and I know I needed to stay in shape and not disconnect from the game or my body’s fitness.”
Some colleges have reached out to Markel and his coaches, but he hasn’t heard from them in a few months.
“Memphis, Rhode Island, California-Bakersfield, and Hawaii (have reached out), but I haven’t talked to them since school ended,” Aune said. They just sent letters and talk to my H.S. coaches. Lots of D2 and D3 schools as well. I’m grateful for what I got.”
One thing that I’ve always appreciated about Markel is his commitment to building up Kennedy from the depths of the Metro West conference, where they won just one game last season. They might be a sneaky surprise, returning Aune, Krystian Toliver, and a few other emerging names.
“I think my school will be good, we got a couple transfers and underclassmen playing at the varsity level,” Aune said. “To get to state we’re going to have to get hungry, humble and confident like (boxer Floyd) Mayweather. I think we have a good chance to go to state this year though for sure. I have to put my team on my back and make them better — that’s my main goal. I just want to be remembered.”
