Capital combo guard Luke Layton has a plan for himself, and he’s being proactive to put the wheels in motion.
The 6-foot-1 rising senior knows what career path he wants to take after college, and he knows where he wants to be in order to make that a reality.
He’s shaping his recruitment to make that happen. And it’s D3s and NAIAs in California that are his target.
“Not a lot of interest yet so far, I’ve emailed some schools, like when we went down to California, to come watch me play. And I’ve been trying to target some smaller D3 and NAIA schools, that’s where I want to play,” said Layton.
His grassroots team recently played in a tournament down in the Golden State, and Layton mentioned that he saw schools like Westmont, Biola and Pomona Pitzer at his games. Those are the schools he’s been reaching out to.
“I just really like California, it’s nice weather. And once I’m done with college I want to be a sports agent or get into sports marketing. And there’s a lot of sports teams in California, so I feel like it might be easier to get a job if I was in California,”said Layton.
A true combo guard, Layton is able to adeptly play either the point guard or shooting guard role. He defined his skill-set in his own words to PHWA.
“I think some of my strengths are facilitating the offense, and then when I get the ball, I think I’m pretty good at finishing at the rim,” said Layton. “And my pull-up jumper and 3-point shot are improving a lot.”
As a junior with the Cougars, Layton averaged 12 points 4 assists and 3 rebounds per game. He was the team’s shooting guard.
“I was off the ball a lot, because we had a D1 point guard last year, and he set me up for a lot of shots,” said Layton, who just wrapped up his 17U season with TC Cougars.
“My main focus was to tighten my handle, because this next season I’m going to be running the point guard a lot more.”
The goals for his final winter of high school ball?
“My goal next year is to get all-league,” said Layton. “And as a team we definitely want to get back to the state tournament again — that would be perfect.”
