Recruiting Report: Jon Martens (2018)
Jon Martens is a 6-foot-3, strong wing for Wear Out The Net who caught our attention at Great Plains Alliance. He’s clearly a good teammate and has a good amount of size, so we assumed he was a football player. Not after some injuries earlier in his career, we were told.
“Before I even played my first game in 8th grade, I broke my tibia and fibula,” Martens told NHR on Friday morning after a win at the GPA. “That was in the third or fourth practice. The next year I broke my thumb, so I just quit.”
Martens is completely focused on basketball now. He really enjoys his time with Wear Out The Net and refers to it as a “family,” like many players for that team often do.
“Jon has been great for us,” said Blake Nicols, WOTN AAU director. “He’s a great athlete who passes well, can defend multiple positions and talks to his teammates on the floor. He’s very vocal.”
He has caught the eye of some college programs, but he hasn’t sat down and thought about anything yet — it’s still a little early.
“I’ve been thinking about college, but I haven’t done my first visit yet. I’ve been getting mail, got a call from St. John’s. I’m up for anything, the type of school doesn’t matter to me. I’ll talk to my head coach and really start thinking about it at the end of the summer.”
In the winter, Martens plays for coach Freeburg at Minnetonka.
“For the varsity season, I’m working on my shot, getting stronger, finishing at the basket. Trying to make my teammates better, stuff like that,” he said.
