Recruiting Report: EJ Jarvis (2019)
EJ Jarvis, a class of 2019 forward at Maret School, is a candidate to break out next season. The Frogs, who are coming off a 26-5 record, lose All Met and DC Gatorade Player of the Year Luka Garza to Iowa. Garza was the team’s leading scorer and rebounder last season, and Jarvis is expected to pick up the slack.
“I am a power forward who can shoot mid range jump shots, run the floor very well, get rebounds, push the ball up the court, set ball screens and post up when needed,” said Jarvis, who gained great experience as Garza’s understudy for two full seasons. “I do a lot of talking on defense. Whenever my team goes zone, and I’m in the middle I feel like it’s my job to be the loudest person on the court so everyone knows what to do.”
Jarvis was a key player for 16U Team Takeover, for their age group. He brings a great feel for the game along with size, athleticism, and energy. Jarvis has clearly put in a lot of work in the gym, and understands what it takes to take his game to the next level.
“I have been working on my free throws and physical strength. I didn’t make a high percentage of my free throw attempts during the school season, so I thought it was vital to improve on that aspect of my game. As for getting stronger, I think it’s essential for a power forward to be strong because it can get very physical in the paint. I think I need to be stronger because it will give me an advantage over my opponent when rebounding the ball or posting up,” Jarvis explained. “I would like to work on a three point shot, and dribble attack moves. I feel that if I can add those two moves to my game I’d be very hard to defend.”
School is one of the biggest priorities Jarvis has. He goes to a very small, yet difficult school where the academics seem to be more rigorous than the athletics. He understands how crucial it is that he manages his time wisely between both school work, and basketball in order for him to be a successful student athlete.
“Attending Maret, and going through the college recruiting process has reinforced the idea that there is life after basketball,” said Jarvis. “My parents always tell me “college isn’t just 4 years, it sets you up for the next 40 years.”
Jarvis has received offers from Virginia Tech, and Columbia. Yale, UVA, Holy Cross, UPenn, Harvard, and Rice have all shown interest in him. He also recently received letters from Notre Dame as well as George Washington. What Jarvis bring to a college program?
“I feel that I can bring anything that is needed to a college program. If coach tells me he needs balls screens, I’m the guy. If he needs 20 points and 10 rebounds, I’m that guy. If he needs a player that can guard perimeter players as well as post players, I can do that too.”
