The SW Minnesota Stars have flown under the radar as one of the top AAU teams in the state. One of their go-to guys in Dylan Hillesheim.
Hillesheim, a 6-foot-2 swingman from Cedar Mountain/Comfrey flies under the radar a little bit because of where he plays, but he’s capable of doing a lot on the court.
As a junior he averaged better than 17 points and three assists while playing top-notch defense for a top-ranked Cougars team.
His summer experience with the Stars has gone very well too.
“I think I’ve improved a lot more this spring and summer,” said Hillesheim. “I’ve gotten a lot of help and focused on getting better at the things I wasn’t great at. I’ve learned and improved a lot. So it’s been great.”
Hillesheim is a multi-faceted offensive player who uses his length and smooth handles to attack the defense. He’s a strong finisher in traffic and does a good job creating open shots for his teammates and he’s improved as an outside shooter a great deal throughout the spring and summer.
He’s also a plus defender, oftentimes drawing the opposing team’s top scoring options. He uses his anticipation and quickness to stay in front of his counterparts and has the length to contest shots effectively.
Hillesheim is hearing from several schools at the NAIA and Division III level and said Gustavus is one that has contacted him most to this point.
With a few more tournaments left in the AAU season as well as a little time left of summer league action with his high school team, Hillesheim said his main priority is improvement.
“I just want to keep getting better as an overall player,” Hillesheim said. “Get recognized more in some of these big tournaments and just continue improving.”
