Recruiting Report: Dalton Kubista (2018)
Dalton Kubista gave Owatonna 20 points per game last winter and helped put in motion a Huskies run that result in a big 2017-18 season.
The Huskies bring back five of their top six players from last season including Kubista, double figure scoring Nolan Malo, Andrew Jackson (Kubista, Malo, and Jackson play together for WOTN), Jason Williamson (a top five 2019 football prospect), and Alex Raichle.
“This winter I grew by being more confident in my shot and I got better at learning the right time to take a shot,” Dalton said.
The Huskies went 18-9 last season and with an athletic team that is deep with size, skill, and toughness they are expected big things over the winter. Expectations weren’t always that high though.
This past winter the Huskies lost to Rochester JM by 17 and the team was down. Until practice the next day.
“The main experience I will took away from the season was after a tough loss to someone, Coach (Josh) Williams walked into practice and said he thought we could win the rest of our games in January which was 10 games and then we ended up going on a 9 game win streak.”
Dalton can score in a lot of ways but this winter he wants to be a better all around player.
“My rebounding and passing are things I want to improve. And being able to create more opportunities for my teammates.”
Dalton’s WOTN 17u team entered the July open period with a 26-11 record ranked 8th in the state.
“Play at the 17u level teaches you how to be more physical and how to finish through contact around the basket,” Kubista told NHR.
Right now Kubista looks like he will be one of the most sought after MIAC recruits in the state. He has the talent to maybe earn a scholarship as well.
“St Johns and St Olaf talk to me the most and I’m going to go visit St Olaf and Augsburg soon,” Dalton said.
Kubista has big goals this winter and that starts by getting better over the summer.
“For the rest of summer I want to continue to improve on my game. Our goals for our senior season are to get first or second in the Big 9 and to make a run in sections.”
