Recruiting Report: Chandler Turner (2019)
Detroit Renaissance 6-foot-5 shooting guard Chandler Turner recently picked up his first Division I offer — from Cleveland State — and several more could be on the horizon.
Currently Michigan’s 16th-ranked 2019, Turner mentioned specifically what it was that the Cleveland State coaching staff liked about his game.
“I’ve had coaches calling me, l and I got my first offer a few weeks ago from Cleveland State, so it’s been going pretty good,” said Turner.
“They said that I had a pretty high IQ and knowledge of the game, and they liked how I handled the pressure, being 6’5, and being able to score the ball and lead the team. They also liked my hustle, like when I miss a shot and get back on defense and make a play. That’s what really stood out to them.”
Turner has been a shooting guard for most of his career, but was put in a position to play point guard last season with the Phoenix.
“I shoot the ball really well, since my freshman year, that’s what I’ve been known to do. But I’ve been improving on my ball-handling a lot, and now I can bring the ball up the floor when needed and score off the dribble,” said Turner.
“I can attack the basket really well, because of my length. And I need to work more on my mid-range game. And defensively I need to work on man defense. I just want to be a guy that’s reliable on both sides of the court.”
He added: “I had to play point guard a lot (last season), because our starting point guard was out, and that’s how I got better at my ball-handling and bringing the ball up, and my passing. It was a good learning experience, and beneficial more than anything.”
Turner was forced to miss the spring grassroots session after he fractured his tibia bone, but this summer he’ll be back at it, playing with REACH Legends 16U.
“I had to go through the rehab to get the strength back in my leg, so I could get back to 100 percent and just better than I was,” said Tuner.
And with schools like Michigan, Michigan State, Detroit, Duquesne, Toledo looking at him this summer, Turner says he’s ready to go.
“I’m excited to get more exposure during the AAU season,” he said. “And I’m excited to come into July live periods, and show them what I can really do, knowing I’m back at 100 percent.”
