Recruiting Report: Beijan Newbern (2018)
Few seniors have been as consistent and as clutch for their 17u team as Beijan Newbern. The Cooper wing has helped Minnesota Select to a great year heading into July.
“Playing with Minnesota Select my role as a player has definitely diminished but playing with a load of talent you have to sacrifice some things to help get jobs done so I have to help out in other way,”Beijan said.
“These events really force me to lock in defensively and limit teams to one possession so I gotta help grab rebounds to help that happen.”
Minnesota Select has won 27 games and is a top five 17u team overall in Minnesota. Newbern also had a nice junior season over the winter putting up over 20 points a game for Robbinsdale Cooper.
“This year I learned how to control a team in more ways than just scoring,” Newbern said. “I had to do the little things and put each of my players in positions they felt comfortable enough to score, or even make plays.
“One experience I learned is that in the end you always got to do what’s best for you as a player. I learned a lot from each of the players I played with this year and that’s what pushed me to make this decision that I’m faced to make this year.”
Beijan has played a lot of roles as a basketball player defending everyone on the floor, rebound well for a guard/wing, handling at times, and always slashing. Newbern know wants to be more comfortable being the main playmaker.
“I’m definitely just filling in to a position I feel comfortable playing. I know I can score the ball from all three levels but being the man who takes the big shot and benign comfortable with that is something Ii need to work on going into my senior season.”
Finding a place to play college basketball and finishing his final twelve months of high school basketball strong is what Newbern is thinking of for the next year.
“A lot of NSIC schools are showing interest and a couple D1s,” Newbern said. “I’m mostly just quiet on that. I want to finish on top and go to a school that I feel comfortable in.”
