Recruiting Report: Austin Weckwerth (2018)
Austin Weckwerth is one of the many guys who stepped up and played well during the grassroots season for D1 Rise. One of the top teams in the state, Rise enjoyed its fair share of success this spring/summer and Weckwerth was a steady contributor.
A 6-foot-2 shooting guard, Weckwerth is a strong perimeter shooter and does his best work playing off the ball, using screens or motion to find space and make himself available for kickout passes or outlets. He’s also a solid defender and makes a lot of plays on pure hustle.
“I thought [the AAU season] went really well for us,” said Weckwerth. “I’ve been with Rise for three years now and I’ve had a blast every summer. Working with the teammates and coaches; it’s been a great experience.”
Weckwerth had a solid junior year with the Wolverines, averaging better than 13 points per game. He’ll team up with Gavin Bates to form what could be one of the best backcourts in Class AA next winter.
“I think I improved a lot over the summer and just over the last couple years,” said Weckwerth. “Playing against all these top players, I’ve had a great chance to learn what I can do and what I need to work on.”
Weckwerth has drawn interest from some local colleges though he could potentially be in a tricky spot as he’s thinking about majoring in agriculture. Many of the local schools in state aren’t known for their agriculture programs (if there’s an ag program at the school to begin with), so Weckwerth could potentially have some different decisions to make.
“I’m exploring options right now for sure,” Weckwerth said. “Bethany Lutheran is one that has talked to me a lot. I’m also looking at schools with a good [Agriculture] program so I’m not sure if I’ll play or I might try to walk on somewhere if that’s what works out best. I’m not sure yet but I’m keeping my options open.”
