Recruiting Report 2018: Zachary Spooner
Zachary Spooner, 6’4″, CG, 2018. St. Johns College HS Washington, DC.
Grassroots Team: District Basketball Club 17 & U.
To put it mildly Zachary is a hidden gem and one of the most best unknown players in the DMV. He has played on very deep and highly ranked St. Johns College HS teams and is overlooked by many college programs. We strongly believe Zachary is a scholarship college prospect whose college stats could very well overwhelm his HS career stats. Once again, the SJC Cadets have a very, very deep & talented team with 10 or more D1 prospects on their current roster. SJC could easily challenge for a national top 25 ranking with 3 other WCAC members, Paul VI, Gonzaga and possibly DeMatha.
We saw Zachary at the DeMatha BSN Summer League which concluded Monday July 3 with SJC winning the championship. Zachary did get some extended minutes and showed superb all around skills. We did not see any glaring weaknesses in his game, and our current player evaluation by our Adam Ayalew is 100% correct in our brief 2 to 3 sentence flash evaluations for each of the 100 players listed for 2018. However, we would like to expand on Zachary’s skills and what he can do. He clearly showed an ability to play the CG, with an excellent & diverse handle in which he can drop dimes to open teammates off the dribble. Zachary showed be can be a very good ball mover and the vision to scan the floor and sense plays before they develop. Before we go on with this Report, we must add that we have not seen Zachary in significant playing time over a season. However, this spring & summer we talked to Coaches & experts who watched Zachary in the Grassroots and in various camps fro long stretches.. They conclude as we do, that Zachary can play mid major D1 basketball.
It is very obvious that Zachary is a team player & gets along well with his teammates and Coaches at all levels. In a day & age of impatience, Zachary must be commended for being a SJC player since his freshmen year. However, it is obvious he has grown as a player at SJC & DBC. watching him play and practice you can see his passion for basketball.
Zachary is very long and can get his shot off and score at all 3 levels on & or off the dribble. From deep range his jumper has excellent mechanics, a high & quick release and good elevation. Additionally, he has shown he can run the break, finish at the rim or make the correct pass. On defense Zachary has very good fundamentals and gets low.
Despite his all around skill- set Zachary works at his game 6-7 days a week multiple times daily. He adds” I am in in the gym working on my jump shot, handle, and pick and roll action or just lifting as of now I need to get stronger and bigger in order to improve my game.”
In the classroom, Zachary carries a 3.0 GPA and he is interested in studying business college and adds, “Currently, I have no offers, but I have looks from schools at all levels, and from D1 Davidson and Howard”. Zachary adds Whichever school lands Zachary will be getting a gem.
In his journey thru life Zachary says,” My parents Sarah Spooner & Deryck Spooner have been my role models, mentors and support me in everything. I am very lucky.”
