Midwest Summer Shootout: Sunday Standouts
2018 Luke Waters, 6’6 SF (ONW Spurs 17U)
Probably the best college prospect we saw this weekend in Ames, Walters is a big and strong forward who can do it all. The Northwest Olathe rising senior has a sweet stroke from deep, and is more than capable of putting the ball on the deck and barreling to the rim. Kansas’ 36th-ranked 2018, Waters certainly looks like a scholarship player.
2019 Jordan Farnsworth, 5’9 PG (All Missouri Attack 16U)
It did not take very long at all for us to identify this slick combo-guard as a special talent. He’s slight but very effective, and has a little bit of Steph Curry to his game. He’ll shake his man and pull-up from anywhere, and doesn’t need much space at all to got of his precision deep-ball. Farnsworth is just flat-out fun to watch.
2017 Terrell Smith, 6′ PG (D1 Minnesota Prospects 17U)
This 2017 guard provided plenty of razzle-dazzle in our viewing of him today. Smith is a slender and athletic lead guard, and was easily the best player on the floor on a semifinal game against Iowa Prep. He proved that by notching a game-high 24 points in that game. He was too quick and to explosive for the opponent, and showcased his shooting ability by canning three triples.
2019 Izaac Raspberry, 5’10 PG (D1 Minnesota Prospects 16U)
This kid was the best passer we saw all weekend, and it wasn’t even close. He was dropping dimes all over the court, seemingly every time we looked up, and you name it, he did it; one-hand, behind-the-back, no-look, and all on the money too. He’ll rack up a lot of assists at Eastview over the next two seasons.
2019 Montrae Hiatt, 6’2 G (D1 Minnesota Prospects 16U)
He broke an 8-0 deficit at the start of the semifinals by calmly knocking down a triple and then nonchalantly ran back down for defense. We knew he was a cool dude then, and as he continued to showcase his skill set, his emotions never wavered. He’s a well-built 6’2 and scores from anywhere on the court — certainly a prospect to keep an eye on.
2018 Andrew Nusbaum, 6′ PG (ONW Spurs 17U)
A quick and athletic scoring guard from Kansas’ Aquinas High School, Nusbaum has enough of a handle to shake his opponent and get off clean looks from the bounce. He has a pure J to pair with his tight handle, and should be seeing some D2, or at the very least NAIA interest come in this summer if he doesn’t already have some.
2019 Dominic Messina, 5’10 (ONW Spurs 17U)
A rising junior, Messina is as quick and athletic as we saw this weekend, and he and Nusbaum certainly made for a tough backcourt for the 17U title winners. Like Nusbaum, Messina specializes in ball-handling and shooting, and was hitting mid-range Js off the bounce with regularity in the title game. He should see his recruitment rocket this summer.
