Intro: Grant Niego (2020)
Class of 2020 Grant Niego is the next in a long line of Niego point guards for Lyons. Just like his two older brothers that play the lead guard spot he is tough as nails, competitive, and a great leader. He can also really shoot the basketball! Niego is a plus shooter off the catch from three. Good passer especially in transition.
The 2020 guard spoke about his freshman campaign.
“It was fun. I played up on the sophomore team and led the team in points. It was a fun experience because you get to earn respect from the sophomores because you are a younger player.”
What was it like getting the experience to play on the sophomore level to help him get used to playing against high school competition?
“It pushes me because they are bigger and stronger. So you have to figure out a way to get your own shot and dribble the ball harder. It is a step up because you are playing a level up. I think I played extremely well. I was the captain of the team. We went 23-2.”
How is it going with Chicago Lockdown 15U?
“We have a good group. We have had a couple down games where we start slow, but when we get in the middle of tournaments we do well.”
He told us what he sees his role being on the team.
“When Connor Glennon is out I am the facilitator, dribbler, and the ball handler. Also I can shoot the three well. I can do a little bit of everything to help my team.”
What are the best parts of his game?
“My strengths are three point shooting and passing. I see the floor really well. I talk well. I am the leader on the team.”
