BSN Summer League Superlatives (Part 1)
HYATTSVILLE, MD — With the recent conclusion of the annual BSN Summer League at DeMatha, it’s time to take a closer look at some of the standouts. Below we run down part one of our superlatives series.
MOST VALUABLE | CASEY MORSELL | ST. JOHN’S ‘19
With so many exceptional performances, choosing a “most valuable” player was difficult, but it’s hard to pick against Morsell. What he did on both ends of the floor was simply undeniable. Morsell not only scored in double figures in each game we saw, but he also hit the glass and defended exceptionally well. He got stronger as the summer went on, and saved his two biggest games for last.
MOST OUTSTANDING | XAVIER JOHNSON | O’CONNELL ‘18
Johnson led Bishop O’Connell to an undefeated regular season, and played admirably well in the semifinal playoff loss to SJC. The rising senior attempted 21 foul shots, and hit 17 in that game. He also hit five of six from thee point range. Johnson is making his weaknesses into strengths, and should only continue to improve.
MOST IMPROVED | ANWAR GILL | GONZAGA ‘19
Given his foot injury that sidelined him for a majority of the spring, we were curious to see how Gill would respond. He exceeded our expectations. Gill was probably Gonzaga’s best, and most consistent player throughout the summer league. He flirted with triple doubles, defended with tenacity, and showed the ability to consistently get in the lane and finish with either hand.
MOST EFFICIENT | SADDIQ BEY | SIDWELL FRIENDS ‘18
In the five games that we saw, Bey averaged over 24 points, 11 rebounds, 2 assists, a steal, and a block per game. He shot over 50% from the field, 40+% from three, and 85% from the line. At 6’7, he can play all over the floor on both ends. Bey is a threat to score with his back to the basket, and can create in pick and roll situations.
MOST CONSISTENT | PRENTISS HUBB | GONZAGA ‘18
One thing you know about Hubb is that he will contribute in multiple areas. If he’s not scoring, he will hit the glass. If he’s not hitting the glass, he will find his teammates. Another thing you can always expect from Hubb is high level defense. He picks up full court, constantly communicates, and is essentially a coach on the floor.
