Recruiting Report: Spencer Rolland (2018)
Apple Valley big Spencer Rolland played a huge role for the state champion Eagles and he’s ready to do it again as a senior.
Spencer finished 53 percent of his attempts, was Apple Valley’s top big man rebounder, and he scored five a game. But what Spencer did the most were things that you don’t see in the box score. Rolland was fantastic defending the post, he was a great vocal defender, Spencer moved his feet as well of screens as just about any bigs, and he set the right screens.
“As the season progressed, I improved both as a teammate and an individual player,” Rolland said. “For one thing, as the winter season developed, I faced tougher and more talented players. My ability to stop these bigs gave me further confidence that I could compete with anyone.”
Next year there are 23 points per game that need to be filled as guys like Mohamed Kone, Mason More, and Kevin Totusek have graduated. Spencer wants to fill that scoring production.
“I want to perfect my out side shot and control of the ball so I can drive to the paint,” Rolland said.
Spencer is working on those pieces while competing with top five 17u team Fury Wilde.
“During AAU, the hardest part is to get back in rhythm with my Fury team,” Rolland said. “This helps me know how to read other players and anticipate their movements. This skill helps both on defense and on offense.”
Rolland is an excellent basketball player but he is most likely a college football talent.
“I have many local division three schools, both for basketball and football, looking at me,” Spencer said.
“I am being more heavily recruited by football teams than basketball though. The most notable schools have been University of Iowa, North Dakota, Brown University, and Harvard.
“I plan on visiting these schools in the next two weeks.”
