Recruiting Report: Marcus Austin (2018)
One of Washington’s best 2018 prospects, Marcus Austin recently transferred from Seattle Academy to Federal Way, his hometown school.
Also, some new Division I interest has start to come in as he heads deeper into his 17U offseason with Seattle Rotary.
“I’ve gotten some interest from schools such as UC-Davis, Yale, and I’ve gotten some letters and stuff from Washington too,” said Austin, who currently holds a Cal Poly offer.
“The plan was to take an unofficial (to Cal Poly) visit around this time, or maybe next month when I get out of school. Right now I’m dealing with all the transferring business, so leaving for a visit would be too much.”
He added: “But I’m still planning on taking a visit there next month, and I’m planning unofficial visits to UC-Davis and Washington State as well.”
Austin lives in the Federal Way school district, and the commute to Seattle Academy was more than an hour and fifteen minutes.
“It’s just so much easier on the family,” said Austin,
He’s been playing with his new teammates for some time now, and says they look very good as a unit.
“I’ve been practicing with them for three months now; we just got done playing our first summer league game, and we were clicking on all cylinders.”
Austin — Washington’s 14th-ranked 2018 — says he’s been working to improve his leadership and his poise of late with his new team.
“I’ve been working a lot on my outside shot and trying to get that more consistent. And I’ve been working on becoming a more poised guard to get ready for the next level,” he said. “So those are the two things I’ve been working on and they’ve both gotten a lot better.”
Now, he’s in the middle of a very important 17U season, with one of Seattle’s best grassroots squads, Seattle Rotary 17U.
“I’m like the seventh man off the bench, so that’s a big adjustment. I mostly just try and fit into their playing style, and still try and showcase my talent. It’s been tough, but I’ve definitely gotten better from it,” said Austin.
The goals for the summer? Turn that interest into offers.
“I have a lot of interest, but I really want something in writing and I’m working hard to do it,” said Austin. “So this summer I’ll be on my game, trying to turn that interest into offers.”
