Recruiting Report: Luke Downing (2018)
Luke Downing, a class of 2018 guard at Maret, is considered a shooter, but is much more than that. Downing prides himself on being well rounded.
“I would describe myself as a two way player that specializes in shooting the three and midrange while playing great defense, and also plays hard,” Downing explained. “A lot of people focus on my ability to shoot the ball, however I love to defend. Even if my shot is not falling one game I feel that I can fall back on my defense and be able to affect the game on that side of the floor. Defense is mainly about effort and I feel my passion for basketball motivates me to want to stop my man every time down the court.”
After his sophomore AAU season, Downing realized that if he improved my defense to an elite level, he would be able to really affect the game beyond just his ability to shoot and score. He wants to improve all aspects of my game. In particular, he wants to improve his ability to finish at the rim, and his ability to use less dribbles offensively.
“I am doing very well in school. I take a lot of pride in my academics and finished this year (Junior Year) with a 3.65 GPA,”said Downing, who is hearing from Rice, Navy, Southeast Missouri State, and Johns Hopkins. “Maret is a very academically challenging school which I believe will prepare me very well for college.”
What can Downing bring to a college program?
“I believe I am high character player that can shoot the ball as well as defend, but more importantly someone who will do whatever the team needs. I am a committed student in the classroom as well and love the process of improving myself as a player, a student, and a person.”
