Recruiting Report- Kevon Voyles (2018)
Like many players on the Eastern Shore of Maryland, 2018 G Kevon Voyles, flys under the radar of the recruiting scene throughout the state. The 6’3 guard has made a name for himself down on the shore while playing for recent bayside powerhouse, Stephen Decatur High. After his junior campaign last winter, Voyles finds himself ranked as the #68 ranked 2018 player in the Maryland Prep Hoops Rankings.
As the Stephen Decatur Seahawks come off a 25-2 season, only losing in an OT game at the 2016 Governor’s Challenge vs. Potomac (VA) & in the 3A state semi final against eventual state champion, Baltimore Poly. Kevon showed his skills by averaging 16 points, 5 rebounds & 3 assists during his junior season. The 6’3 guard also earned himself multiple honors such as All State honorable mention, All Bayside Conference First Team & Governor’s Challenge all tournament 2nd team, while averaging 17.5 points per game in the event.

Voyles describes himself as “a scorer who can put the ball in the hole at anytime who can handle the ball and shoot.” As a big guard, Kevon feels he can finish in traffic, always play above the rim and lock down his opponent with his length. When asked who he compares his game to, Voyles said former Kentucky guard, De’Aaron Fox as they are are comparable in size and play style. This playmaker also stated that he aspires to play like Kobe Bryant as “he was just an all around dog with the grit and desire needed.” After watching Voyles compete against great competition at the Governor’s Challenge last season, I personally feel he has all the tools to succeed at the next level. The 6’3 guard has the grit and determination to always improve on his already diverse skill set.
Currently, Kevon is playing for New World Virginia out of Northern Virginia this summer, far from his high school in Berlin, MD. Voyles is willing to do anything needed to improve this summer, evident by his team choice. When talking about playing for New World VA, he says what he is looking to gain is “the chance to see what I would do matched up against the best players in the world” so far he states himself and his team is excelling in that area. Kevon spoke very highly of the discipline and hard work of his team this summer as they all have the common goal of getting better and getting noticed.
In regards to playing in college , Kevon has received interest on all levels but still working hard on picking up offers as he just wants a school where he can play basketball and excel in life, no matter the level. On the D1 level, he has received interest from UMASS Lowell, UMES, Lafayette & Holy Cross and has also received interest for multiple smaller D2 and D3 schools such as Virginia Wesleyan, Catawaba, Dickson, St. Thomas Aquinas, Randolph Macon, Fairmont St. & Cairn. Kevon is currently keeping all options open and hoping to bulk up his recruiting this summer and throughout his senior season. He did state that what is looking for in a school is “somewhere I can excel on and off the court and give myself the opportunity to have a bright future and go far.” Kevon plans to study sports medicine in school and go in to become a physical therapist.
In the near future, he has no plans except to get better every single day as he just wants this very important summer to play out. He mainly plans to work on his 3 point shooting ability as becoming a better deep ball shooter would take his game to a new level, with his quickness and ability to drive, a consistent 3 point shot would be tough for any opponent to attempt to stop. Last summer, Kevon worked on everything and his all around game, which paid dividends to his and Decatur’s success last season. As his hard work and push from his coaches is what he benefits the improvements in his game too, he believes the same will do so for his work on his 3 point shooting and overall improved game this summer.
As a very hungry and hardworking player, Kevon Voyles is for sure flying under the radar in terms of how talented he is. Voyles is a long, athletic guard who plays solid defense while being a scoring force and overall playmaker on the offensive side. Watching him in gameplay would sell any school currently interested in him, as he has been an absolute force in all games that I have personally seen. Anyone looking to see him play can catch him next season with Stephen Decatur looking to make another state title run or at the following tournaments thus summer with New World Virginia:
July 12-15 Addidas Final Challenge Spartanburg, SC
July 21-23 Elevate Hoops Summer Showdown Philadelphia, PA
July 26-30 Fab 48 Las Vegas
