Recruiting Report: Jake Binley (2018)
Two years ago, Select had a Simley scorer named Jack Stensgard (now at South Dakota) who put up big numbers his senior year as a “walking bucket,” as the kids say. There’s now another Spartan making a splash for Select: Jake Binley, class of 2018.
Jake averaged 19 PPG as a junior on varsity.
“Select has been fun,” Binley told NHR. “We have been very competitive in our tournaments. We’ve been in a lot of close games that haven’t gone our way, but we’ve learned and gotten better from those games. My teammates are all really great… I always look forward to playing with them, and Mitch (Ohnstad) is a great coach. He is constantly making us better.”
Ohnstad is known for being an AAU coach who actively works on player development. “I think I’ve became a better shooter since AAU started… both off-the-dribble and catch-and-shoot,” Binley added.
Right now, Binley is probably on the D2/D3 fringe, depending on how his summer/winter goes.
“Colleges that I’ve been talking to the most are St. John’s, St. Olaf, Gustavus, Saint Mary’s, Concordia-Moorhead, and Sioux Falls,” he said. “I went to visit St. Olaf last month. Looking forward to visiting other schools soon. I’ve been talking to the coaches a lot at St. John’s and Gustavus about getting up on campus again. Our team chemistry has been good and I think a large part of that has to do with how most of us played with each other last year.”
This year’s Select group has a core group of guys who played up last summer along with some key acquisitions. Catch the team this weekend at the Northstar State Tournament.
