Recruiting Report: Cire Mayfield (2018)
Point guard Cire Mayfield of St. Louis Park and Minnesota Select was one of the biggest senior stock raisers of the entire spring.
Mayfield had a strong high school year as well putting up 13 points (shooting 47.6 percent from the floor and 78 percent from the foul line), 3.1 assists, 3.1 rebounds, and 2.3 steals per game.
“I think I grew more as a leader,” Mayfield said of his junior year.. “Coming in as a freshman I was really quiet as a basketball player.
“My coach told me I needed to speak up more and take more control over my team, and because of that my teammates trust in what I say to them. That helped me grow as a person so do things that you aren’t comfortable with.
“An experience that I will take from this I think is just playing on the team I play with. I love all my teammates and staff, I’m just blessed to play varsity basketball.”
Mayfield is listed as a 5-foot-10 point guard so his focus is on becoming a bigger guard and completing plays around the cup.
“I definitely need to get stronger and work more on my ball handing skills, and working on how to finish through contact,” Mayfield said.
Mayfield is the lead guard on Minnesota Select who is the third ranked 17u team in the state and the top ranked non-shoe sponsored team.
“Every team is a good team, every game is going to fought hard and that nothing will be easy,” Cire explained. “The competition level is crazy compared to the winter season.”
Select is competing within the NY2LA Basketball League plus they have played in several of the best events in Minnesota this year.
“I’ve learned to change the speed of the game go fast when u have the chance but when it’s time to slow down and get a good shot make sure u slow down.”
Cire is hearing from schools at all levels.
“I’ve been talking to South Dakota for a while now but I haven’t visited any schools yet,” Mayfield said. “I’m hearing from Hamline, UW-River Falls, Briar Cliff, St. Mary’s, and UW-Stevens Point.”
To get ready for the next level Mayfield has a plan.
This summer I definitely want to hit the weight room as much as I can,” Mayfield said. “And get in the gym and put up a lot of shots.”
