Recruiting Report: Carter Kopet (2018)
Cleveland’s hopes of getting to the state tournament went down in a heap when Carter Kopet suffered a torn ACL in January. He’s working his way back and has big plans for his senior year.
He feels good about where he’s at in June.
“It feels really good,” Kopet said of his knee. “The first month or so I didn’t know if I’d walk again, that’s how it felt. It’s a slow process but it’s taken off for me and I feel great. I’m at five months post-op and I’m feeling great. Now it’s just about taking the time to get full strength.
“Physically it’s hard to get over the hump but once you are at this stage it’s all mental. Its trusting that knee and trusting that you can do the same stuff you used to do. It’s a lot of work. It’s taught me a lot about being committed.”
Kopet is one of top guards in the 2018 class and a stat-stuffing machine. And when he’s not tearing it up on the hardwood, he’s throwing touchdown passes at record-breaking paces on the gridiron.
To this point he’s drawn a good amount of interest in both sports though the caliber of offers in football are higher.
“I haven’t made a decision but I’m talking to everyone and keeping everything open,” said Kopet. “Basketball has been the sport I’ve put the most work into getting better at but in the last year or two I’ve really grown with football. With the options I have available I’d lean football but that could all change. I love both sports so nothing is out of the picture.”
A knee injury that wipes out his 17U AAU season — one where he otherwise would’ve been in great position to showcase his abilities with the MN Rise program — certainly hurt him from a recruiting perspective for basketball. But he’s drawn interest from a lot of local schools including Bethany Lutheran, Gustavus, St. Mary’s and Concordia Moorhead.
He’s heard from a lot of Division II programs for football including Minnesota State University, Mankato, Augustana and Minnesota State University, Moorhead. He’s also been in contact with North Dakota State University.
