Prospect Spotlight: Koriyon Carr (2018)
TOPEKA — A 5’10 2018 guard, Koriyon Carr is among the top returning players in Topeka and is emerging as one of the state’s top players.
Known for his ability to score, Carr averaged nearly 20 points per game last season to go along with 3.5 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game.
He took his outside shooting to new heights last season, knocking down 50 3-pointers and shooting 37 percent from long distance. Armed with speed and quickness, Carr is able to push the tempo and can get to the bucket at will and is also big enough to post up smaller players and score inside.
“My coach has molded me more into a guard that shoots a lot of jumpers because I can spot up and shot off the dribble I’m at shoot first point guard,” Carr said.
A varsity starter since his freshman season, Carr took on the role of a leader last season and was named All-City first team, All-Centennial League and second-team all-state for Class 5A.
West finished the season 6-15 last year, but have high expectations for next season with nine seniors returning.
Carr says he is looking forward to playing Topeka Hayden and 2019 wing player Zach Harvey, who is widely considered one of the top players in the state.
“It gives me a chance to match up with Harvey and show that I can play at the next level also he’s a good player and already has many offers and that’s what I’m working for,” Carr said. “Our team would love to get a win at their place because it’s always a hard environment to play in they have great home court advantage.”
Carr says his younger brothers have had the biggest impact on his basketball career to date as they both look up to him and his success, both on the court and in the classroom.
“I’ll be the first to attend a 4 year university in our family and I want them to follow me and do the same,” he said.
On the court, Carr says he is a fan of UCLA freshman and NBA draft pick Lonzo Ball.
“I really enjoy watching Ball play basketball because at the end of the day stats don’t matter to him he’s doing whatever it takes for his team to win whether it’s scoring, rebounding, facilitating or just playing lock down defense and he is a winner in every level so far and I want to have that type of impact on my team,” Carr said.
