Prospect Spotlight: DeAndre Phillips (2019)
DeAndre Phillips is a 6’0 wing from River Ridge High School located in Lacey, Washington.
DeAndre might be the most intriguing prospect in the 2019 class. He is brand new to the game and has been a gym rat ever since. He is a little raw but has that, “never quit” type of attitude. He is a 6’0 shooting guard with elite athleticism, rebounds out of this world, and his skill set is rapidly improving. He is simmering to have a breakout season this summer and fall. Playing for COB (Community of Basketball) he has proven he can be a do all it all type of player. With July right around the corner you will get a chance to see him up close and in person competing in some of the most competitive tournaments held in Seattle, Washington.
DeAndre had a productive sophomore campaign, but was little overshadowed by some other prospects on the COB Hawks. When he is locked in and focused. He can provide some consistent play. He has a great frame and strength around the hoop. He shows Flashes in spurts of being a capable defender and shooter.
I got a chance to catch up with DeAndre at one of his summer league practices. He is a very smart kid and I was blown away with how humble he is. He spoke about his attention to detail and overall passion to continue to learn the game. He has had some success this year during AAU play but also spoke of some setbacks, which every player will go through.
During my interview I asked him to explain what a coach might say about your game?
“My game is all about hustle and intensity. I don’t look to be the best scorer on the team. I look to be the best teammate and do what I can to help us win. Coach Terrance Howard will tell you that I am super athletic and I can rebound very well at my height. We play in a lower division so I’m not outsized to bad, which enables me to use my length and athletic ability even at 6’0 and be successful. My coach will tell you I’m a good listener and follow instructions very well. I do my best at all times because I know in order to beat out the more talented guys I need to work harder than they do.”
Community of Basketball is a very well established program and has the reputation of building high IQ type players. What has been your overall experience?
“I couldn’t ask for a better coach in Terrance. He has given me the confidence to continue to play and learn the game I love. The coaching staff here works hard with the players who are committed to the vision and goal of the organization. Our tournaments have been pretty competitive and we are getting better with each game and practice. The goal is to be able to showcase what we can do on the court in hopes it provides an opportunity for kids to play at the collegiate level. I know that as time goes on I will continue to improve and I feel that Coach Howard has full confidence in me.”
What are some parts of your game this off-season you would like to work on?
“My 3-point shot and my handle needs to improve in order for me show that I can be competitive at the next level. I know that I will need to be a wing player and even play some point guard. My hustle and intensity is there but my overall skill will need to get better this off-season.”
I would like to see him go to a good JUCO program where he can develop and continue to learn the game.
