Prospect Spotlight: Cole Matthiesen (2019)
Cole Matthiesen, a class of 2019 wing at St. Albans, is not just a nice under-the-radar prospect in the area, but one with a high motor and a nice all-around game. This spring, we’ve seen the significant improvements Matthiesen has made, most recently last week at the BSN Summer League. Matthiesen recorded 22 points and 10 rebounds on 11 of 16 from the field in a 14-point win over Good Counsel.
“I would say I am a team player who gets his teammates involved. Hustles every play and gives my all. Look to score when I see opportunities,” Matthiesen explained. “One thing I do on the court most people don’t really see is how I’m always hustling and not giving up on plays.”
Matthiesen pulled down 10 or more rebounds in five games last season. With the departure of Bulldogs’ leading rebounder Charles Snowden, that number is likely to increase. Matthiesen has clearly worked on his fitness, and is committed to improving all aspects of his overall game as well.
“My outside game and ball handling have really improved. In general just becoming more comfortable playing on the perimeter,” Matthiesen stated. “I would say I need to work on becoming a better perimeter defender as well as developing a three point game.”
Matthiesen is averaging a B+ at St. Albans, which is known for its rigorous academic regimen. Columbia is one school that has inquired about Matthiesen recently, but he’s gone relatively under the radar in most recruiting circles. What can Matthiesen bring to a college program?
“I think I can be a guy who does the little things and will always hustle. As well as a player who has the ability to score and be an efficient rebounder.”
