Kansas Jayhawk Team Camp (Team Recaps)
Kansas Jayhawk Team Camp (Team Recaps)
Several teams from across Kansas took part in the annual Kansas Jayhawk Team Camp in Lawrence, getting an opportunity to play in historic Allen Fieldhouse. Here is a look at some of the teams that stood out.
Blue Valley Southwest (Kan.): To be honest, these guys looked a little rusty. They have some nice pieces, including a solid point guard in Nick Parker, a good shooting guard in Billy Bartlett and a good interior player in 6’5 2020 Chris Miller. However, the Timberwolves are coming off a 4-18 season in 2016-17 and play in a tough league and face stiff competition.
Junction City (Kan.): After watching the Blue Jays compete in Lawrence, it’s hard to imagine how this squad won just five games a year ago. They certainly have a lot of pieces, especially a good inside-outside tandem in 2019 guard AJ Dickerson and 2018 post Xavier Cason. We look for Junction City to improve considerably on their season from a year ago.
Lawrence (Kan.): The home town Lawrence squad lost a lot, not only to graduation, but suffered the loss of point guard Clearance King to injury, as well as the transfer of 2019 Noah Butler to Free State. They still have some nice pieces in place, including point guard Trey Quartlebaum, who enters the upcoming season as one of our players to watch. And do-everything forward Brett Chapple is a really nice player, capable of doing a lot of different things at a high level.
Shawnee Mission East (Kan.): They have some really nice pieces for a successful 2017-18 season, including four returning core varsity players from a squad that went 11-10 a year ago. Leading the way is Jack Schoemann, one of the more under-rated performers in Kansas. He is a talented wing player that can handle the ball, shoot from distance is brings length to the court. He and 6’7 2019 forward Zane Meeks form a tough inside-outside forward tandem and the Lancers are solid in the backcourt with Kelyn Bolton, a 6’1 2018 guard and Seamus Carrol leading the way.
