Class of 2020 Top Wings
Who are the best wings in the 2020 class in the state of Illinois? We break it down for you here!
Lamontay Daughtery (DuQuoin)
Overall Rank: #3
Travel Team: Brad Beal Elite
Daughtery stands at 6’5” with long arms and projectable body. He is playing up on the 16U level with Brad Beal Elite. Daughtery is a plus athlete that can impact the game with that on both ends of the floor. Shot blocking presence on the interior. Defensively he has the physical tools, but will need to get more of a mindset to lock in and get down in a defensive stance. Offensively he flashes with a feathery jumper and slick handles. Not consistent possession to possession. Love his upside as a prospect! Has high-major ability written all over him.
Isaiah Rivera (Geneseo)
Overall Rank: #8
Travel Team: Quad City Elite
Rivera has the looks of a young high-major D1 prospect. He is a versatile player with at 6’4”. Can play the one through three positions on the offensive end of the floor. Very strong when attacking downhill putting the defense on their heels. He attacks his man and can either go around them or through them with his strength. Gets to the rim with relative ease against 15U competition. So smooth with the ball in his hands. Not a knock down shooter at this stage, but is capable of hitting a pull up jumper from both mid-range and three on occasion. What makes him such a tough cover is his passing ability. Great passer in half court and transition. Feel for getting others involved at a young age. Rivera also competes on the defensive end moving well laterally.
Bryce Hall (Simeon)
Overall Rank: #23
Travel Team: Mac Irvin Fire
Hall is a long wing with upside. Our Chicago evaluators think he has a chance to develop into one of the better wings in the class. Plays a secondary role on the Fire 15U team to Miller and Burnett, but does flash ability. Could see some minutes this season for the Wolverines on varsity.
Lance Mosley (DePaul Prep)
Overall Rank: #25
Travel Team: Illinois Wolves
Mosley is a rangy 6’3” combo guard that is extremely bouncy! The DePaul Prep 2020 guard loves to attack off the bounce on straight line drives. Gets to the rim with an explosive first step. At times can be a little wild around the rim. Mosley is a plus mid-range shooter pulling up from 15 feet with consistent accuracy. Hasn’t quite stretched it out to three at this point. Rebounds extremely well for his position on both ends.
Josh Holmes (Jones)
Overall Rank: #31
Travel Team: ET21 Buckeyes
Holmes is an impressive young scoring guard. The 6’0” Jones 2020 prospect just has a knack for getting buckets. He is a sound perimeter shooter with a clean looking stroke from three. Also has a nice shot fake where he lets his man fly by and then drills a pull up jumper. Holmes will either need to grow or develop point guard skills to become a D1 player, but early in the process he is worth monitoring.
Luke Ervie (Freeburg)
Overall Rank: #33
Travel Team: Gateway
Ervie is a 6’0” 2020 combo guard out of Freeburg that plays with a lot of toughness and grit. The guard has an advanced feel for the game at a young age. Plays with good pace and doesn’t rush things. Takes what the defense gives him. Sound perimeter shooter especially off the catch from three. Can also hit a pull up shot with some consistency. Solid handles in the lane slashing off the bounce. Struggles a bit finishing through contact due to lack of strength. Creative passer in the half court making sound reads with the ball. Rebounds well for a lead guard. One to watch going forward!
Destin Whitaker (Romeoville)
Overall Rank: #34
Travel Team: Meanstreets
The Romeoville 6’3” guard has a lot of physical tools that will peak the interest of college coaches. Size and length for the two guard position. Good athlete that makes plays in transition. Streaky shooter, but has the chance to improve in that area. Upside as a defender. One to track as he will be on a very good high school team next season.
Keshawn Williams (Bloom)
Overall Rank: #35
Travel Team: Young & Reckless
Williams is a player that at 6’1” has some projectability to his game. The Bloom guard is a smooth athlete that is an excellent shooter. Pulls up on the dime from mid-range and can connect from three off the catch. Plays under control and surprises you with his explosion. Active defender. Should grow a few more inches.
Dante Maddox (Bloom)
Overall Rank: #36
Travel Team: All-In
Maddox is a confident wing from Bloom at 6’2”. Effective shooter off the catch from three. When he hits a couple can get rolling from deep. Gets out in transition playing above the rim in that area.
Justin Taphorn (Pekin)
Overall Rank: #39
Travel Team: Illinois Wolves
Taphorn is the younger brother of Northwestern wing Nathan Taphorn. The 2020 prospect stands at 6’4” already with good strength. Like his older brother his money is made shooting the ball. Quick release from three off the catch. Most effective spotting up from the corners. Mixes in a one dribble pull up and gets out in transition on occasion. Plays under control.
Amir Spann (Mt. Vernon)
Overall Rank: #40
Travel Team: Jets-Ramey United
Spann is a prospect that we saw play some during the high school team where he mostly played on the JV squad in which he was a standout along with seeing a little tick for varsity. The 2020 6’3” shooting guard has solid size and strength at a young age. Should grow a couple more inches which will give him ideal height for his position at the college level. Best playing off his raw athleticism. Makes plays in the open floor as a finisher. Passes it well in the half court making quick dishes to his post players. Rebounds well for his position with plus bounce. Defensive potential long term once he learns to lock in on that end of the floor.
