Class of 2018 PG Breakdown
The point guard group in the 2018 class in the state of Illinois has some things to like about it. Four of the top nine prospects in the class are from the lead guard spot. Here we breakdown the position as a whole.
It all starts with Morgan Park 2018 five-star Ayo Dosunmu. The 6’4” point guard out of Chicago is a dynamic lead guard that changes the game with his speed, vision, and ability to get to the rack. He is the top overall prospect in Illinois and a player that many high-majors are making a priority.
The other three prospects in the top nine of the overall rankings are Xavier Castaneda (Whitney Young), Kendle Moore (Danville), and DeAndre Heckard (Romeoville). Each projects as solid mid-major targets. They go about it in different ways, but each have strengths that should allow them to be effective MM point guards at the next level. Tyronn Mosley out of Orr is a player that is inching his way into this group with a strong close to his junior year followed by playing well with the Illinois Wolves this spring.
Low-major targets are led by Maurice Commander (Curie), Xavier Pinson (St. Patrick’s), and Branden Ellis (Warren). All three elevated their stocks with quality play this spring. Some D2 players that we think would be excellent players at that level are Bailey Dee (Champaign Central), Ahmad Muhammad (St. Joseph’s), Isaiah Fuller (OPRF), Jalen Hodge (O’Fallon), and Michael Smith (Joliet West).
When looking at the small college level you can find different types of point guards. A few that we would prioritize for D3/NAIA schools are Kevin Caldwell (Alton), JJ Flores (Harvest Christian), Morgan Taylor (Marist), Jack Marinko (Edwardsville), Brandon Simberg (Libertyville), and Cortez Bailey (Bogan).
