Around the State: Border Belt (2018)
Prep Hoops makes a stop in the Border Belt of the Pee Dee Region. Marlboro, Chesterfield, and Dillon consist of the Border Belt. Raymond Felton former North Carolina player and current NBA guard hails from Latta. Jazz trumpet legend Dizzy Gillespie is from Cheraw. Here is a look at some of the talent in the Class of 2018.
Shane Hammonds McBee HS
Hammonds a 6’1 guard plays football, basketball, and baseball for the Panthers. Hammonds passed for 600 yards and rushed for 625 yards for the football team. Hammonds averaged 11.3 ppg on the basketball court. Hammonds plays second base for the baseball team. Hammonds has a nice mid-range game but also has the ability to get the ball to the rack.
Jay Redfern Chesterfield HS
Redfern 5’10 point guard averaged 9.1 ppg and 2.7 rebounds last season. Redfern has a nice mid-range shot and takes the ball aggressively to the rack.
DJ Lindsey Chesterfield HS
Lindsey 6’1 combo forward averaged 9.6 ppg and grabbed 3.6 rebounds for the Golden Rams. Lindsey plays football for the Golden Rams. Lindsey caught 25 passes for 535 yard and six touchdowns last year.
Nazir Mallory Cheraw HS
Mallory 6’2 averaged 8.6 ppg and grabbed 4.4 rebounds for the Braves. Mallory is an undersized post, strong post for position in the paint. Mallory plays both football and basketball for the Braves.
Kristian McCray Cheraw HS
McCray averaged 6.3 ppg and had 2.1 rebounds for the Braves. McCray is a 5’10 left-handed guard. McCray can shoot the ball and distribute the ball for the Braves. McCray will look to help the Braves move from finishing fifth in the Region last year. McCray hope to help the Braves make a run in the Class 2A playoffs.
Quandaveon McCollum Marlboro County HS (Bennettsville)
McCollum plays football and basketball for Bulldogs. McCollum 6’4 post player is a loose change guy. McCollum is not overally skilled at all but plays with a great amount of effort. McCollum is not afraid to take a charge at when on the floor.
Kendall Moultrie Latta HS
Moultrie averaged 8.6 ppg and grabbed 3.0 rebounds last season. Moultrie 5’11 guard led the area last year in football catching 55 passes for 851 yards and seven touchdowns. Moultrie will look to lead the Vikings to region title in both football and basketball next year.
Tyquan Porter Dillon HS (pictured on front)
Porter is a 6’2 guard is a multi-sport athlete. Porter plays WR/DB on the football field. Porter started his high school career at Latta HS before driving over 6 miles to Dillon. Porter averaged 8.7 ppg for the Wildcats last season. Porter a left-handed guard stalks the baseline and is a very streaky shooter.
Rakeem Fletcher Dillon HS
Fletcher 5’9 point guard averaged 6.1 ppg for the Wildcats last season. Fletcher keeps the ball low to the ground. Fletcher has been on the varsity since his freshman season.
