Run N Slam: 2020 Scouting Pt 2
PrepHoopsIllinois spent the weekend in Ft. Wayne at the Run N Slam. This prestigious event is one of the annual must stops on the spring evaluation tour. Here is part two of our 2020 Scouting Report!
PG DJ Steward (Meanstreets)
Steward was fantastic! The Fenwick 2020 point guard is coming off a monster freshman campaign and has continued to improve. Great measurable with size and length for the two guard position while playing the lead guard spot. He has defensive tools to guard each backcourt position. Was a big time shot maker at the Spiece Fieldhouse. He shot the ball particularly well from beyond the arc. Free and easy release. Best we have seen him shoot the rock. Silky smooth with the ball going in and out of traffic getting where ever he wants on the floor. First game of Saturday it was about the three. Second was all about him attacking the defense and getting to the rim (granted they only had four players out there at one point). Best as a passer in transition as he made several full length passes that led to layups. He is a high-major prospect and in the conversation for the #1 overall spot in the 2020 class in Illinois.
PG Tyler Beard (Meanstreets)
Beard had quite a weekend for Meanstreets. The Whitney Young 6’2” point guard has strength and showed much more athleticism than we have seen in the past. Showed more explosiveness off the bounce and finished at the rim a few times with monster dunks that were impressive. Beard played aggressive throughout the event. He is a scoring point guard that is a streaky shooter from deep. Mixes in passing ability. Outstanding rebounder for the lead guard spot. D1 prospect.
PG Ahron Ulis (Meanstreets)
The younger brother of Phoenix Suns point guard Tyler Ulis has made strides in his game this spring. Ulis runs a team well in the half court making sound decisions with the ball. Not an big time athlete, but he gets where he needs on the floor. He is an above average three point shooter early in the process. Showed throughout the weekend he could drill threes at a solid clip.
SG Destin Whitaker (Meanstreets)
The Romeoville 6’3” guard has a lot of physical tools that will peak the interest of college coaches. Size and length for the two guard position. Good athlete that makes plays in transition. Streaky shooter, but has the chance to improve in that area. Upside as a defender. One to track as he will be on a very good high school team next season.
PF RJ Ogom (Meanstreets)
Ogom is a unique prospect. At 6’5” the undersized power forward has a physical body and uses that to play with force around the hoop. Best getting on the glass for put backs. That is where most of his points come. Finishes well on second chance opportunities along with converting through contact. Tough post defender. Upside is somewhat limited unless he grows or develops more skill.
SF Quincy Ademokoya (Meanstreets)
Ademokoya has one of the highest ceilings of any small forward in the 2020 class. At 6’5” the Normal West wing has a rangy body that projects extremely well long term as he should grow a couple more inches. Tough defender on the perimeter. Offensively his biggest strength is his perimeter shooting. Showed over the weekend his range stretches out to beyond the arc. One to closely watch! Needs some refinement and more production, but upside is definitely there.
PF Kee Hargrow (Meanstreets)
Welcome to the radar Mr. Hargrow! The Joliet Central 6’6” power forward broke out in our eyes at the Run N Slam in Ft. Wayne. He only played on the sophomore team this past year so not a lot of people know about him, but they will soon. Very mobile post player with quickness around the hoop. Quick off the ground and is super bouncy finishing in the paint. Works well in the pick and roll. Solid rebounder with projectability long term.
SG Nimari Burnett (Mac Irvin Fire)
Burnett was a lights out shooter from the perimeter on Saturday. At this point in his development he is a standout shooter from three. Smooth release from deep with great arc on it. He was on fire hitting many off the catch. His attacking game and passing will need to take the next step for him to be the player that he can be, but he has the time and potential for that to most likely come true. Burnett mixed in a couple transition scores and a put back. He had 18 points against The Family. Potential high-major prospect.
PG Adam Miller (Mac Irvin Fire)
Miller is a big left handed point guard with great size and athleticism for the lead guard spot. He is more of a scoring guard at this stage in the process. Started off cold bricking a couple threes, but then he got rolling. Most of his points came by blowing past his defenders and getting to the rim. Explosive burst off the bounce that allows him to get past any defender. Plus handles. Streaky shooter as that will need to make strides for him to reach his full potential. Miller is a high-major prospect and in the running for the #1 spot in Illinois.
PG Marcus Watson (Mac Irvin Fire)
Watson is a 5’10” point guard from Morgan Park. He played the majority of the season at the sophomore level for the Mustangs, but as the season went on he saw quite an important role in their run to a 3A state championship. Watson loves to be in attack mode. He is quick and shifty with the ball in his hands. Gets in the lane where he converts acrobatic finishes at the rim. Solid passer and has a knack for getting to the line. Streaky shooter that can get hot on occasion from three. Pesky defender against opposing lead guards.
PF Shon Robinson (Mac Irvin Fire)
Robinson has a chance to be the best post prospect in the 2020 class. At 6’8” the power forward already possesses legit size and length for the position. Solid athlete. Struggled finishing at the rim throughout the event in Ft. Wayne. Mobile post that has the ability to rebound in and out of his area. Made a few nice passes. Needs to play more aggressive to reach his immense potential.
