Run N Slam: 2020 Scouting Pt 1
PrepHoopsIllinois spent the weekend in Ft. Wayne at the Run N Slam. This prestigious event is one of the annual must stops on the spring evaluation tour. Here is part one of our 2020 Scouting Report!
PG Jack Kahoun (Illinois Wolves)
Kahoun was fighting through an illness, but the leader of the Wolves 15U showed why he will be one of the better points in his class. At 6’2” Kahoun is out of Oswego where he saw significant run as a freshman. He is a plus shooter from all over the floor. Drilled them off the catch and hit a couple pull ups. Makes crisp passes and moves well away from the ball. Competed on D and moved well laterally.
PG Donovan Newby (Illinois Wolves)
Newby is a 6’0” point guard out of Bloom that received a lot of attention after a big freshman campaign. He is making noise on the circuit as well playing with the Wolves 15U. Newby is a quick and shifty guard that makes plays in the lane. For his size the lead guard is outstanding at finishing through traffic and contact at the rim. Made a ton of tough layups. Has the ability to consistently win one on one off the bounce. Really gets after it on D with active hands and is pesky guarding opposing point guards.
PF Jordan Kwiechinski (Illinois Wolves)
Kwiechinski is a 6’6” four man from Loyola that has long term upside. He is rail thin at this stage and will need to add significant strength over the next three years. Like how he is a scrappy player and plays with a lot of grit. High points rebounds and plays hard. Runs the floor extremely well for a big. Hit a nice pull up mid-range shot. Intriguing prospect to watch his development.
PF Bennett Kwiechinski (Illinois Wolves)
This Loyola 6’6” power forward is long and thin. He lacks functional strength and will need to add a lot of bulk over the next few years. The 2020 post has some tools to work with. Very mobile for his size and rebounds well snatching them at their highest point. Makes strong outlet passes. Flashes ability to score on the block with quick moves.
C Connor Linke (Illinois Wolves)
Linke stands at 6’8” with a 6’10” wingspan. The 2020 center from St. Charles North has great size and moves very well. Tremendous upside, but will need to add on strength in his final three years of high school. Linke has impressed us with his competitiveness in the paint especially on the defensive end. Shot blocking presence that has a chance to be a plus rim protector. Rebounds very well in his area. Gets on the offensive glass at a nice clip for put backs. Flashes potential scoring on the block. Linke has a chance to be one of the better centers in this class.
SG Lance Mosley (Illinois Wolves)
Mosley is a rangy 6’3” combo guard that is extremely bouncy! The DePaul Prep 2020 guard loves to attack off the bounce on straight line drives. Gets to the rim with an explosive first step. At times can be a little wild around the rim. Mosley is a plus mid-range shooter pulling up from 15 feet with consistent accuracy. Hasn’t quite stretched it out to three at this point. Rebounds extremely well for his position on both ends.
SF Justin Taphorn (Illinois Wolves)
Taphorn is the younger brother of Northwestern wing Nathan Taphorn. The 2020 prospect stands at 6’4” already with good strength. Like his older brother his money is made shooting the ball. Quick release from three off the catch. Was most effective spotting up from the corners. Mixes in a one dribble pull up and gets out in transition on occasion. Plays under control.
PG Griffin Yaklich (Illinois Wolves)
Yaklich has grown significantly since we last saw him. The Normal West 2020 is now up to 6’1”. Point guard handles it well and is a quality passer. Had several nice dishes in traffic including one sick no look dime in the paint. As a scorer he had multiple runners in the lane and hit a three.
C Collin Crothers (Illinois Wolves)
Crothers has a chance to be among the better centers in this class. The Benet post has size and a good build. Moves well for his size and is active. Crothers played both on the 16U and 15U levels over the weekend. Fights for position on the block and showed quality footwork. Struggled finishing at the rim in several games through traffic. Showed he could handle it a little too out of the high post putting it on the deck for a couple dribbles.
PG Elliot Sieger (Illinois Wolves)
Sieger is one of the top lead guards in the state of Illinois. He proved that during the high school season by posting monster numbers. The DePaul Prep lead guard is a heady point guard that has an outstanding feel for the game. Gets in the lane with ease where he finishes with runners. Can also hit an occasional three off the catch. Active hands on the defensive end. D1’s need to be looking at him early in the process.
G Dan Florey (Chicago Lockdown)
Florey is a 6’3” combo guard from St. Ignatius. He posted a big season on the sophomore team last year and is primed to make major noise on the varsity level this year. Florey is a high IQ guard that plays under control. Not overly athletic, but gets where he needs to operate. Tremendous feel passing it especially in the half court and works well in the pick and roll. Jumper wasn’t falling consistently in the game we saw, but he is a high level shooter.
PG Connor Glennon (Chicago Lockdown)
Glennon is a tough as nails 5’8” point guard out of Brother Rice. The tough guard has a strong and stocky build. He is a good passer and can hit a three when given space.
SG Christian Shumate (Chicago Lockdown)
This was our first look at the Plainfield East 2020 shooting guard. Shumate showed his athleticism off the minute we sat down. He hammered home a monster dunk right from the jump. Quick to the glass as he rebounded well for his size at 6’2”. Explosive in transition. Raw athlete that lacks much skill at this point. Needs to improve free throw shooting.
