Recruiting Report: Justin Boyd (2018)
Class of 2018 shooting guard Justin Boyd is a 6’3” rangy wing from Whitney Young. At this stage he is primarily a 3 and D player. Does most of his offensive work spotting up for threes. Good form and elevation on his shot. Particularly likes to let it fly from the corners. Can also step in on occasion to hit a mid-range jumper. Not a great ball handler beyond a couple dribbles. Potential as a backcourt defender at the next level. Low-major/D2 prospect.
Boyd is coming off a 4A championship run with the Dolphins this past season.
“The high school season was fun winning a state championship with the guys that I was with. It was fun to play with my brothers. I had a slow start to the season, but then I started playing strong. My coaches and teammates kept telling me to play my hardest each game. The injury I had mid-season slowed me down, but I never gave up and kept pushing.”
He told us a few of the areas he improved as a junior.
“My rebounding, ball handling which I still have to improve, and being a leader.”
This spring he is playing with Meanstreets in the Nike EYBL.
“I am playing my part and doing what coach Ty (Slaughter) says. Going out there and making shots. Rebounding and playing all over the place.”
He updated us on his recruitment.
“I have some looks, but no offers yet. I am talking to Tulsa, Drake, Creighton, Oakland, and a few others.”
Boyd talked about what he feels he can bring to a team at the next level.
“Scoring, rebound, outside shot, and being a leader.”
