Recruiting Report: Jake Stephens (2018)
Jake Stephens, a class of 2018 power forward from the eastern panhandle of West Virginia, has been a standout performer this spring with 17U Erick Green Premiere on the grassroots circuit. Stephens says he’s had a ball in his hands since kindergarten. Now finishing up his junior year at Musselman High School, Stephens is really coming into his own.
“I like to bang it inside. I really like playing defense, and rim protecting. Helping out my teammates,” Stephens explained. “On the offensive end I like my back to the basket game, right hand hook.”
Stephens boasts broad shoulders and a well built 6’8 frame to go along with very long arms. A 7’3 wingspan to be exact. One thing we really like about Stephens is his ability to shoot the three.
“The most improved part of my game is probably my 3 point shot. Started probably in high school, and couldn’t really shoot it that well,” Stephens stated. “Now my shot is coming very fluently, and I don’t really think about it.”
Lehigh, American, Columbia, and Navy are among the schools who Stephens is currently receiving interest from. He is a 4.6 student. He is planning an unofficial visit to Navy on June 8, and Columbia wants him to attend one of their elite camps at the end of June.
“People probably don’t see the screening that I do. I like to hit ’em and make ’em feel it when I’m there,” Stephens joked. “One thing I need to work on is handling the ball under pressure. Whether it being a trap or dribbling the rock.”
What does Stephens think he can bring to a program at the next level?
“I can bring a defensive presence on the inside. Some shooting from the outside, and then on the inside just another post up player.”
