On The Radar: 2018 Small Forwards
Over the last few days, we have been putting out our Top 10 lists of some of the best players for different categories. Obviously, there are more beyond the Top 10 and we want to highlight those players as well. Today, we are looking at five small forwards that are on our radar but need more attention.
Cortney Shorter – 6’4 | SF | Fort Wayne South (IN) | Spiece Indy Heat Red 2018
Shorter is a guy that showed us last fall that he could have some talent. Now, a winter and spring later and he looks like he should be deserving of more interest. Good size on the wing and plenty of athleticism. Needs to be a little more efficient on offense but the skill is there to be useful. Has a ton of upside and could be a solid addition.
Donyell Meredith – 6’4 | SF | Lawrence Central (IN) | All 4 Him 2018-Bonds
Meredith is a guy that we have liked for a while. He’s big, strong, and plenty athletic. Two-sport athlete that has shown a ridiculous upside when he is locked in. Would like to see that more often but if he can do that, he would be a potential DI prospect. Even so, he’s a guy right now that needs more attention from his scoring ability and size.
Jack Hegwood – 6’4 | SF | Indianapolis Roncalli (IN) | All Out 2018
Hegwood has had a really good spring and he’s really turned himself into a valuable piece. He’s still in need of more height but even at 6’4 he can play well now as a faced-up forward and could play the 3 or 4 for a small school program. He’s really improved his ball handling and creation ability from the wing. Stock is up and worth a look.
Jeremy Szilagyi – 6’4 | SF | Fishers (IN) | IE Trojans 2018
In this class, you have plenty of shooters. Maybe more so than in the past few years. With that, though, is Szilagyi who might be the best deep range shooter in the class that no one knows about. Not only is he a good shooter, he’s got great size on the wing and can take it off the bounce a bit. Will need to clean up his release with those but overall, a guy that should be looked at now.
Spencer Ballinger – 6’6 | SF | Oak Hill (IN) | GP Select 2018
Ballinger is a guy who hasn’t played AAU until this season and now he is getting a different look outside of Oak Hill. He’s a guy who is also a very good shooter and when he gets hot he can rip of three or four in a row. Spencer has a large frame and weight but will need to learn how to use that to his advantage. Right now, a guy that could rise this summer.
