On The Radar: 2018 Shooting Guards
Over the last few days, we have been putting out our Top 10 lists of some of the best players for different categories. Obviously, there are more beyond the Top 10 and we want to highlight those players as well. Today, we are looking at five shooting guards that are on our radar but need more attention.
Dontez Rayner – 6’2 | SG | Indianapolis Lighthouse (IN) | Indiana Legends 2018
Rayner is a guy we got to see this past winter and thought we should track. Since we have, he’s really been playing well and has a legitimate shot of being an early impact guy if he goes at the right level. Big frame, tons of strength, and a ton of room to grow. He scores the ball really well right now as a line driver but has shown a good jumper as well.
Jaylen Minor – 6’2 | SG | Evansville Bosse (IN)
Minor isn’t a guy playing AAU this spring but during the high school season we saw what he could do. Tall combo guard with a ton of range and length making him an ideal on-ball defender. He’s not bad on offense either as he can drive and score at the rim. Not a ton of skill beyond the three-point line but he provides options for so many roles that he should have more interest.
Nate McLain – 6’2 | SG | Center Grove (IN) | GP Premier 2018-Blake
McLain is a long, range guard like Minor but Nate is a bit skinnier and more offensively oriented. He’s tall and handles the ball really well. Could play on the ball for some teams if needed. Really like his ability to slash and dish. He’s got to be able to bring the offense every game but we have seen his peak performance and it is fairly impressive.
Peyton Trexler – 6’1 | SG | Southwood (IN)
Trexler is another guy you won’t find on the AAU circuit but plenty worthy of interest. Trexler is a big, tall guard with strength and handles. Has some breakdown ability but more of a perimeter threat and a guy who can get the ball up the floor. Shoots it well when he chooses to. Really good rebounder from the guard spot on the floor.
Ty Drake – 6’4 | SG | Sullivan (IN)
Drake is another guy that is hidden a bit. Playing for a smaller AAU program in Indiana Rage 2018, Drake isn’t a mainstream guy but he can score it like one. He’s a skinny 6’4 guard that can really light it up from the floor. Good balance of shooter and scorer and while thin, he doesn’t back down. Great getting into the lane. A guy more need to get eyes on.
