Prospect Spotlight: Mitchell Jones (2019)
Washington’s 43rd-ranked 2019, 6-foot-5 power forward Mitchell Jones is playing up with Washington Elite 17U this spring and summer, and hopes some to come out of his offseason with some recruitment.
A post first, the Stanwood sophomore is working to develop his perimeter game. Jones explained to PHWA what his current skill-set is, and what he could bring to a college program.
“I consider myself as a post, my strengths are posting up and playing down under the basket. I can shoot pretty well, but I’m more of a post and down-under guy,” said Jones.
“I need to get better at shooting and dribbling, and also seeing the open man and looking up when I dribble.”
Jones added: “I don’t know how much more I’m going to grow, so I need to start working my game out to the perimeter.”
This past winter the sophomore post played both with the JV and varsity, switching between both and playing two quarters at a time with either team.
“When I went in for varsity I was playing the post. They would just asked me to go get rebounds, and get buckets,” said Jones.
“My role next year is going to play the four position, I think I played well this past season, and I think I’ll contribute very well next year.”
Now, with Washington Elite 17U, he’s embracing another season of playing up with guys a year older than him.
“Back when I was in seventh grade I was approached about playing up with the eighth-graders, and I talked about it with my parents and decided to, and I’ve been playing up ever since,” said Jones.
“It’s helped my game a lot playing against older kids that can really challenge me.”
He’s had one school — thinking he was a 2018 — ask about him, and hopes his recruitment continues to spike as his offseason wears on.
“I know Olympic College out of Bremerton asked about me, but once they found out I was just a sophomore they backed off a bit. And that’s about it — nothing too serious yet,” said Jones.
“I hope I get a few offers or at least some interest this summer. I just want colleges to start looking at me.”
