Prospect Spotlight: Micah Groom (2019)
Ionia 5-foot-10 guard Micah Groom spent his winter honing his skills with the Bulldogs’ JV, and is continuing to better himself this spring and summer with Boondocks Basketball Club on the grassroots circuit.
A defense-first guard, Groom takes great pride in being a defensive stopper; offensively, he’s best while attacking the rim.
“When I’m out on the floor I really like defense, I work hard and cause a lot of turnovers — not just when I’m on the ball, but causing deflections and things like that,” said Groom.
“On the offensive side, I feel like I grab a lot of boards for a guard, and I like to score by getting to the rim and around the paint.”
This past winter while playing with the JV, he says his role was to distribute and score when needed.
“I was a captain on that team and I started at point guard most of the season, the games that I didn’t I started at two guard,” said Groom. “I looked to get the ball to our big, he was good. And when I needed to I would take my guy off the dribble.”
He set himself up this past winter for a large role with the varsity next season when he’s a junior.
“I really just want to help my team win a district championship and go farther than we did this year,” he said. “I hope to come out and start, and be a defensive stopper and look for our main scorers.”
In the meantime, Groom — Michigan’s 61st-ranked 2019 — will be spending his spring and summer with Boondocks Basketball Club, he made the switch after playing with Grand Rapids Storm last season.
Groom says the switch was made for recruitment purposes. He feels smaller in-state programs is what he needs watching him.
“The exposure that I need isn’t going to be outside of the state, I think it will just be some of the smaller colleges that I would be a better fit with,” said Groom, who is already actively working on his own recruitment.
“I have a profile with NCSA, and I’ve been working to build that up. I haven’t really had any recruitment yet, but I’m planning on attending a few exposure camps this summer.”
Groom added: “I’m just hoping to get my name out there so that people can know who I am and put a face to my name, and just know what I can do.”
