Prospect Spotlight: Cade Cunningham (2019)
Cade Cunningham just completed his sophomore season at Madisonville – North Hopkins High School. Basketball is a special sport in the Cunningham family. Cade’s brother, Noah, just completed his senior season and has committed to play at Brescia University in Owensboro, KY this fall. PHKY caught up with Cade to talk about his sophomore year and what he hopes basketball has in store for him going forward.
Cunningham helped lead Madisonville – North Hopkins to a 15-15 overall record. The Maroons won the 7th District tournament championship and earned a berth to play in the regional tournament. “My sophomore season at Madisonville-North Hopkins went very well, as I was a strong contributor on the varsity team,” said Cade. Cunningham averaged 6 points and 2 assist per game, while shooting over 48% from the field and 45% from behind the arc.
Cade is a very fundamentally sound player who can drive and create for both him and his teammates. As shown by his high 3-point field goal percentage, he is obviously a threat from deep as well. “I think I will be looked upon to be more of a scorer next season for my high school team.”
Playing AAU for Pocket City Basketball in Evansville, Indiana – Cunningham has helped kick start a 9-3 record, while also earning 2nd place at the Hoop Group Kentucky Jamfest in Louisville. Cade starts at the point guard position and will compete at the May 26th adidas Gauntlet regional quarterfinal in Chicago next.
Cunningham says that he hopes to improve getting his jump shot off faster in dribble pull-up situations, and needs to continue working on his ball handling as well as his overall strength and quickness. “Improving those aspects of my game will hopefully help me prepare to take on goals for my junior season. We want to win the regional championship and make a run for a state title at Rupp Arena. Individually, I’d like to make the All-Region Team.”
Noting that when it’s all said and done, Cunningham wants to find a school that fits him both academically and as a basketball player. “I’ve started having coaches contact me this spring so I’m looking forward to the process.”
