Intro: Donovan Newby (2020)
Donovan Newby is a 6’0” point guard out of Bloom that received a lot of attention after a big freshman campaign. He is making noise on the circuit as well playing with the Illinois Wolves 15U. Newby is a quick and shifty guard that makes plays in the lane. Finds open teammates and create for himself as well. For his size the lead guard is outstanding at finishing through traffic and contact at the rim. Makes a ton of tough layups. Has the ability to consistently win one on one off the bounce. Really gets after it on D with active hands and is pesky guarding opposing point guards.
He spoke about his freshman campaign with Bloom.
“It went good. As a freshman I think I did well. The times I could help my team I did. Overall it was a good season.”
What does he see as the strengths in his game at this stage?
“My strengths are setting up other people. I like to think the game. Next play. I know how to get people the ball and I can also get a bucket.”
He is also a pesky defender as well.
“Yea my dad always told me to attack opponents and don’t give them space to do anything. That is what I do.”
Newby is running the show for the Illinois Wolves this spring.
“It is going good. I like the experience here. They are helping us get to college and I really like that about the Wolves program. I see me being a set up man on this team. With Jack Kalhoun he is a shooter and Lance Mosley can attack the basket. When it is needed I can get a bucket.”
The 2020 lead guard recently landed his first offer from DePaul.
