Grand Strand : Underclassmen
Prep Hoops takes a look at some underclassmen down on the Grand Strand. The Grand Strand consist of Horry and Georgetown Counties down on the coast of the Palmetto State.
Mike Green – Christian Academy of Myrtle Beach (pictured on front)
Green 6’2 has been a mainstay in the Saints backcourt since his 8th grade season. Green (2018) a left-handed guard plays with the Southern Stampede on the EYBL circuit. Green averaged 14.3 ppg, 2.9 rebounds and 5 assists last season. The Saints finished 20-12 and lost to Zion Williamson and Spartanburg Day School in the 2A-SCISA State Championship Game. Green has scored 1,206 career points entering his junior year.
Ty’shaun Richardson – Waccamaw HS (Pawley’s Island)
Richardson played his freshman season at Georgetown Science & Arts before going to Waccamaw HS this past season. Richardson (2019) a guard really likes to play a uptempo style and loves to attack the basket. Richardson averaged 7.3 ppg in his first season with the Warriors.
Davis Guyton – Christian Academy of Myrtle Beach
Guyton 6’5 likes to play on perimeter and has great touch out to 3 point range. Guyton (2019) the youngest of 3 coming through the Saints program has great hands. Guyton should see his numbers go up this season after averaging 4.2 ppg last season.
Jalen Matthews – Christian Academy of Myrtle Beach
Matthews (2019) is a great role guy on this team. Matthews a small forward must improve on perimeter shooting. Matthews averaged 5.4 ppg last season for the Saints.
Stephon Green – Carvers Bay HS
Green had a good spring playing with Manzer Basketball Club with Guyton. Green 6’5 wing at times shows great glimpses of breaking out. Green (2019) a wide receiver on the football team will have to decide which way his future will take him in the years to come. Green averaged 8.5 ppg and 3.2 rebounds for the 16-10 Bears this past season.
Janaz Sumpter – Carvers Bay HS
Sumpter (2019) plays quarterback for the Bears on the football field. Sumpter shoots a set shot. Sumpter averaged 6.1 ppg last season.
Tyron Stockdale – North Myrtle Beach HS
Stockdale (2019) 6’0 shooting guard plays with a great deal of confidence. Stockdale has the ability to create his own shot. Stockdale plays wide receiver on the football team.
Cason McClendon – North Myrtle Beach HS
McClendon 6’5 can play inside-out on the floor. McClendon (2019) came on late in the season last year and started at quarterback for the Chiefs.
Jahrique Isaiah – Loris HS
Isaiah 5’10 should team up with Travis Walters (2018) next season for the Lions. Isaiah (2019) a pesky on the ball defender averaged 7.2 ppg, 3.5 rebounds and 3.5 assists last season for the 15-6 Lions. Isaiah had 9 receptions last season on the football field.
Emorie Knox – Myrtle Beach HS
Knox is in a class by himself at times. Knox (2020) point guard leads the back court with Robert Swanson for the Seahawks. Knox plays with a local AAU team the Myrtle Beach Phenoms. Knox has started to developing a perimeter game.
Timothy Steele – Conway HS
Steele (2020) started several games for the Tigers last season as freshman.
Tonka Hemingway – Conway HS
Hemingway’s future might be on the gridiron for the football rich Tigers program. Hemingway (2019) recently received a scholarship offer from the South Carolina Gamecocks. Hemingway shared the paint last year with Jimmy Nichols (2018).
Payton Lewis – St James HS (Murrells Inlet)
Lewis had a good spring for Manzer Basketball 15U with Lawton Fulford. Lewis a deceptive athlete has a fearless attitude on the floor. Lewis saw good minutes for the Sharks this past season. Lewis (2020) will look to lead the Sharks into the future.
Cameron Spain – Socastee HS
Spain (2020) 6’5 should see minutes on the varsity this season for the Braves. South Carolina bound Jason Cudd has graduated and leaves a void in the middle for the Braves. Spain plays AAU with Knox on the Myrtle Beach Phenoms.
Lawton Fulford – North Myrtle Beach Christian
Fulford has already played 4 years of varsity basketball. Starting in the 6th grade and reclassifying already. Fulford (2021) averaged just over 17 ppg last season for the Stallions. Fulford is a big-time shooter.
