Chicago Classic (Adidas Gauntlet Series) – Saturday Standouts
(Lake Barrington, Il) Saturday I was at the Canlan Sports complex checking out some 17U action at the Chicago Classic who had games going on across multiple locations in the North Suburbs. Here is a look at some of the standouts from Saturdays action at Canlan Sports Plex.
SF – 6’9’’ Matthew Hurt – D1 Minnesota (2019)
Top ten player nationally in the class of 2019 Matthew Hurt was dynamic on Saturday and could not be stopped. The long lanky 6’9’’ SF moves well on the court and doesn’t force anything on the offensive side of the he can score from all three levels and has a smooth mid-range game. He was very efficient on offensive. Hurt can score in a fury in the first game I watched him he had 7 points in about the first 30 seconds. On defense Hurt can guard multiple positions and he a solid rebounder and shot blocker who has a good second jump. Overall, I came away very impressed with Hurt and he certainly is a high major prospect with offers from about everyone.
PF – 6’8’’ Race Thompson – D1 Minnesota (2018)
Race Thompson was a force in the paint on Saturday. The 6’8’’ PF out of Plymouth, MN uses his size get to the rim and finish. Had several big time moves in the post, and was also very effective in the mid post area where he showed he can score off the bounce. Thompson was active on the glass on both ends of the court. Thompson was best in the half court setting but flashed some game out in the open court on the break for some nice finishes. He passes well for a big man and has a good feel for getting the ball out of the double team and to shooters. Like the upside of Thompson who has several P5 offers.
PG – 6’3’’ Anthony Lynch – Kessel Heat (2018)
The tough guard out of Larkin had a day scoring the ball off the dribble Saturday. Lynch is a solid ball handler and a true scoring Point Guard. He loves to attack the rim and break down his defenders from the top of the key. Had three big scoring out puts with 27 points, 22 points and 29 points on the day. He flourishes out in the open court and on the break. He had a monster slam over a defender for the and-1 bucket in a game I scouted. He isn’t overly explosive or quick but very effective and productive scoring the ball. Has an offer from D1 American University and could be a Low D1 or D2 prospect?
C – 6’10’’ Jalen Shaw – Kessel Heat (2018)
Jalen Shaw started out a little sluggish Saturday but had a terrific second game of the day with a 31-point scoring performance where he had his way in the paint with several big dunks and scores around the rim. He also showed he could step out and hit shots from the perimeter. Shaw hit a 3 from the top of the corner and had a couple nice mid-range jumpers. Shaw is having a solid spring and has picked up offers. He is only 16 so he is young for his class and as his body matured and if he continues to work on his skillset to go along with his size he will end up being
SG – 6’4’’ Armon Brummett – Team Manimal (2018)
Armon Brummett is an elite athlete and flashes athleticism where you just say how’d you do that. A two-sport standout, is a slasher from the wing who can break a defender down in isolation and score from all three levels. Had a big game against Eric Gordon All stars. He rebounds from the wing and can get out on the break and finish at the rim with authority.
