Recruiting Report: Tyler Bosma (2018)
West Ottawa’s 6-foot-5 small forward Tyler Bosma is coming off the heels of a successful sophomore season with the Panthers, and currently checks in as Michigan’s 36th-ranked 2018.
But despite the great potential he has with hoops, it appears his potential is greater on the diamond.
Bosma will not play grassroots ball this spring and summer — he has not played in year’s past either — and will instead focus on baseball.
He will get in the gym some, mostly during team camps in June.
When we last spoke with Bosma in the summer of 2016 he was still split on which sport he may want to pursue at the next level. Now, because of some increased recruitment, his priorities are more catered to baseball.
“I’m kind of leaning towards baseball right now, just because I think there’s more of a potential future in it,” said Bosma.
“For basketball I’ve been still kind of talking to Grand Valley State and Hope. But for baseball I’ve been talking to Michigan State, University of Cincinnati, Xavier, Ohio; those are the main ones right now.”
He added: “It’s (baseball) not 100 percent, but I think if I were to get offers from the same level of program, I would choose the baseball path.”
Still, he says basketball could be an option for him at the next level. And he’s got an entire senior season to show college programs what he’s capable of.
“I think I’ve gotten stronger, so it’s helped me to be more of a presence inside, on defense and rebounding. And I’ve been working on my footwork a lot which helps me with dribbling and defense as well,” said the big wing.
Bosma was a key piece to the Panthers’ success this past season, and says he took pride in being a guy who could do it all for his team.
“It was a pretty successful season overall, and I think it was not necessarily expected for us to be as good as we were, and I think we exceeded expectations a little bit,” said Bosma.
“I would say I was pretty proud of how I played. I was versatile throughout the game based upon what our team needed. My role changed every game based upon what the team needed from me.”
