Recruiting Report: Nigel Haughton (2018)
The John Carroll Patriots are always considered one of the top teams in the state of Maryland. They currently have one of the top-ranked players in the country in Immanuel Quickley and also Montez Mathis, a guard who has garnered plenty of interests from mid-major colleges.
Early on this past season, the Patriots had to suffice without Quickley for the first two months of the season. Although they have Mathis, losing a floor general such as Quickley would’ve meant for major struggles for any other team. Luckily John Carroll had Nigel Haughton to pick up the slack and eventually assert himself in the starting lineup even when Quickley returned.
“Immanuel is a very good pass-first point guard, so he lets me handle the ball when I need to,” Haughton told PrepHoops. “When he was out for the first two months, I took on the point guard role and when he came back, I switched to the two and looked to score more while he was more of the facilitator.”
The Patriots finished with a 21-13 overall record in a very competitive MIAA A Conference. Haughton averaged 13 points, four rebounds, and three assists per game.
This past Tuesday, Haughton received his first offer from Loyola (MD). He told me that a number of Ivy League schools have shown interest in him recently. Dartmouth has been another school that has shown high interest.
The six-foot lefty has a very high basketball-IQ when it comes to picking and choosing his opportunities to score. As he said earlier when Quickley returned to the lineup, they depended on him to be more of a scoring threat, but in that time where he had to facilitate, it helped showcase his ability to set up teammates.
“I want to improve on being more of vocal point guard,” Haughton said. “I’m more of a quiet kid, so my goal for this summer is to be able to talk my teammates through situations.” He’ll be playing with Team Melo Red 17U this spring/summer.
Haughton currently has a 3.8 GPA. While he prefers to go to college somewhere south of Maryland, the Ivy League schools are all north, but Haughton would be honored to attend any of those prestigious institutions.
