Recruiting Report: Michael Salter (2019)
Romeoville 2019 Michael Salter is a 6’3” guard that has a smooth combo guard feel to his game. He has size to play the two guard spot, but the feel of a point. Outstanding passer that has a high basketball IQ and vision especially in the half court to find cutters going to the hoop and open shooters. Slick handles attacking off the bounce as he consistently gets in the lane. Good form on his shot with range out to three. We will continue to track him heavily this spring as we liked the progress we have seen since our last evaluation of him. Has D1 skills.
He spoke about his sophomore season at Romeoville.
“I felt like we had a couple ups and downs throughout the year. Toward the end we really cleaned it up. We went on a seven game winning streak in January that helped us make a push into the post season. We fell short in the regional championship game against Joliet West. Overall we feel as a team that although we might not have accomplished what we wanted to we had a pretty good year.”
They have a young core of prospects coming back and should be able to make a run.
“Next year is going to be amazing. We have all four of us with me, DeAndre Heckard, Dontia Johnson, and Khalil Blakney coming back next year. Those guys will be seniors and I will be a junior. Next year will be the year for us. Everybody has got us the past few seasons. We were inexperienced and lacked senior leaders. Next year will be that experience year for us.”
How did his game come along?
“I feel like I developed more as far as my jump shot. I still have to going to the rack more and that comes with getting stronger. I feel like I did pretty good. I feel like I could have done better. Overall I feel like I played my hardest. I am going to continue to develop into the player that everyone knows I can be.”
Salter will play with Meanstreets once again on the circuit.
“It is going to be fun. We have a lot of pieces that people don’t even know about. We have a couple guys that people aren’t talking about. We have a lot of guys that can do a lot of different things. It should be a real fun year.”
He spoke about the strengths of his game now and going forward.
“Projecting toward the college level I feel my strengths are shooting the ball. Facilitating, passing, and talking. Talking on both offense and defense. Playing tough defense. Those are my strengths.”
Salter took a trip to visit DePaul a few months back.
“They have a state of the art arena coming. I love the coaching staff. When I went they made me feel like I was home. It is great because it is here in Chicago.”
Salter is not just a hoops prospect, but is on Lifetime’s reality show Bringing Up Ballers. How has that experience been?
“It is nice. It is a lot of pressure. You have a lot of people watching you. Once you are on national television and people see you throughout the community. Besides that pressure it is good. It is good to walk some place where people know your face.”
