Recruiting Report: Johnny Roeser (2019)
Class of 2019 Johnny Roeser is a 6’4” small forward from Carmel that has an intriguing game. He handles it excellent at his size and can really pass it. Almost a point-forward in some respects. Gets the ball off the backboard and pushes it end to end. Makes crisp passes on the money for dimes. Plus wing passer. Rebounds well for his position as well especially clearing the defensive glass and starting the break. As a scorer he is slick with some drives. Jumper has a long release, but potential to become a weapon. Roeser is a top 15 prospect in the 2019 class and a D1 prospect.
He discussed with us his sophomore year at Carmel.
“It went pretty good, but we came up short in the regional final like last year. We played what good with all the transfers we had. We are just getting a feel for each other, but overall it was a good year for us and we are looking to build on that momentum for next year. I think I played well. I had a slow start at the beginning of the year, but the coaches believed in me and kept telling me to shoot. The second half of the year was much better.”
Where did he see improvement this past season?
“Overall I think I grew with my shooting. At the beginning of the year it wasn’t going in, but at the end I was making a lot of shots. It got better throughout the year.”
Roeser runs on the 16U Illinois Wolves that is a well balanced group.
“We are all good players for our high schools, but we have our individual roles here. I think we are getting a feel for it. I am the passer. We have a lot of shooters and scorer so I try to get them the ball.”
What is he hoping to show college coaches this spring during the live periods?
“Hopefully I can show them I can shoot it and my overall feel for the game. Getting my teammates involved and playing hard.”
One program has been out to see him.
“Holy Cross came to visit me for an open gym, but that is about it.”
We would expect things to gradually pick up for Roeser on the recruiting trail over the next few months.
