Recruiting Report: Dannie Smith (2018)
Class of 2018 small forward Dannie Smith had a breakout season at Orr this past year. He went from unknown to one of the most productive wings in the city of Chicago. He stands at 6’6” with a strong and physical body along with solid length. His game is based off his toughness and motor. Clears the defensive glass. As an offensive player he attacks downhill where he can finish through defenders. Not a quick twitched athlete, but rather attacks with power. Also a capable shooter off the catch. Potential on the defensive end. Low-major prospect.
Smith spoke about his breakout season which ended in a state championship.
“My high school season this year was terrific. I like what we achieved. We achieved our goal. That goal was to come out and win a state championship. We did that. I helped be a big part of that. I am proud of myself and proud of my teammates. My year went good. At the beginning of the season I was doing good, but nobody really noticed me until the end of the season. Now that a lot of people see me it is good that I am getting looks. There is still work to be done.”
What does he bring to the table as a player?
“I feel like I am an all-around player. I can shoot it and pass it. I have a great IQ. I rebound. I like to play team ball. I don’t really care about all the points. I just want to win.”
Toughness is a major part of his game as he showed with Orr this season.
“I am a real tough player. I am physical and aggressive. I like to stick the best player on the team and be that guy that shuts them down. I like the challenge. I step up to the challenge.”
No offers currently, but he is gaining some interest on the recruiting trail.
“I have talked to Wyoming, Chicago State, UIC, and a few others.”
Smith plays with Mac Irvin Fire NY2LA on the grassroots circuit.
