Prospect Spotlight: Calvin Thomas (2020)
O’Dea point guard Calvin Thomas was able to come up and play with the varsity at the of his freshman season this past winter, and should be a key piece to the Fighting Irish the next several years.
The 5-foot-5 defensive-stopper played mostly with the freshman squad, but was up with the varsity by season’s end. He reflected on his freshman season, from both perspectives.
“My freshman season I just wanted to work on my defense more, and I think I led the freshman league in steals. And I scored at least 15 in every game this season, except the last few because I was up with the varsity,” said Thomas, who defined his playing style to PHWA.
“My strength is more defense than offense, and when I’m on the court I give energy and get everybody hyped and pumped,” he said.
“I need to work on my shooting, but I’m more of a good passer with great vision. I just really need to work on my shot.”
This spring and summer, the spirited point guard will play with Bellevue-based program Local Hoops 15U.
“I’m going to be the starting point guard and I want to get some recruiting exposure during the out of town tournaments, and I want to help our team win as much as I can,” said Thomas, who is more concerned with improving his game than recruitment right now.
“If it (recruitment) happens that’s great, but really I just want to play and get better.”
After his summer is done, he’ll go right into preparation for his sophomore season with the Fighting Irish.
“Since a lot of seniors just left, I want to try and take over as a sophomore,” said Thomas. “And take the team to The Dome.”
