Nike Spring Showdown: Derrick’s Saturday Dimes
Prep Hoops Illinois Staff was on hand for Day 2 action of the Baylor Youth Nike Spring Showdown in the West Chicago Suburb of Romeoville, Il It was an action packed second day, and here we look at some of the Standout Performances. Nike Spring Showdown: Derrick’s Saturday Dimes.
G/F – Jalen Boyd 6’4’’ (2018) Chicago Lockdown
St. Joes Catholic Jalen Boyd showed he could be a go to option scoring the ball for Chicago Lockdown. Boyd has a throwback old school style game and loves to work the mid-range area where he is efficient Boyd he also showed he could hit 3’s from out on the perimeter. He has good size for a wing and is a solid defender where he can guard multiple positions, he rebounds well and had several big blocks Saturday proving he can bring it on both ends. Has improved his handles some as well as improved his court vision. D-2 prospect.
SF-Terrence Hargrove Jr. 6’6’’ (2019) Hooperville Warriors
The dynamic playmaker out of East St. Louis continued his strong play Saturday at the Spring Showdown and proved again why he is one of the top players in Illinois 2019 class. Terrence Hargrove Jr. had a big-time performance in the game I scouted. He did a little bit of everything scoring in a variety of ways. He stepped out and hit a three early on, had some nice scores off the bounce as well as some put back baskets from offensive rebounds. Hargrove was clearly the most talented player on the count and had his way using his 6’6’’ frame to grab rebounds on both ends. He is a super athletic and has improved his shot from outside becoming more consistent. He burst on the scene out at East St. Louis this year, and is still kind of unknown nationally but it will not be long before D1’s start to take notice as he has high major potential.
G-Tyler Cochran 6’3’’ (2019) Hoopers Basketball Club
A Key contributor on Bolingbrook’s 3rd Place High school team. Cochran continued to impress running with the Hooper’s Basketball Club 17U. Cochran is a high-energy player who brings a lot to his squad and can impact the game is many ways. He scored from all three levels Saturday and really liked to work the baseline and mid post areas where he would face up and shoot the jumper or use the bounce to get baskets at the rim. He displayed some a real nice ability to dish it out off the drive often finding teammates for easy baskets at the rim. Cochran also rebounds well and can bring lead the break following a rebound. His versatility he brings makes him an asset on the court and someone that can impact the game. He has a good feel for the game and doesn’t really force much. Low-Major D1-D2 level prospect.
SF- Deng Reng 6’6’’ (2018) ET21 Buckeyes
Wheaton North SF Deng Reng had another solid day. The SF has good length and has improved his outside shot so he doesn’t have to rely on slashing to the basket for scores. He showed that ability hitting some big threes’ and working the baseline area for mid-range jump shots as well. Played well in transition and in the open court where he can use his length to get the rim to finish. Has improved his handle and defensive instincts from the last time I saw him but still has some areas where he is still a little raw but I like the upside of him as a prospect.
SG- Ben Fort 6’4’’ (2018) Miller Factory (Ohio)
Ben Fort had a big game against ET21 Buckeyes. Fort out of Ohio is a 6’4’’ SG that has good length and athletic ability a smooth release on his jump shot and solid handle. Fort plays with a high motor and brought a lot of energy on the defensive end with solid on ball defense, and had several steals out in the passing lanes.
